With fish delivered daily from Billingsgate Market, this no-frills chippie has a small but solid takeaway menu; its not unusual to see a queue out of the door on a Friday night. If you eat in, theres a larger menu offering extra choices such as dover sole and salmon fillet, plus the opportunity to have your fish grilled rather than fried (an extra wait is required). Rugged brick walls and withered hanging plants bespeak a long-gone era; and the ambience on our Saturday lunchtime visit wasnt enhanced by an absence of customers. Mustard-battered cod was prepared with a one-sided coating of light, crispy batter, which allowed the fishs flavour to come through. Things werent so successful with more exotic choices: grilled swordfish was overcooked and tough, and the squid rings in our calamari starter were so tiny they were overpowered by their batter coating. Still, stick to the classics and Masters shouldnt disappoint.

Not a pretty sight but the food is incredible and served quickly and politely. Thoroughly recommend it.
