London's best review, food and drink news
Really, really good fish and chips are a rare thing, and worth waiting for. At Faulkners, a cheery East End chippie, youll find them. Our cod was crisp, dazzling white and not too oily; chips were glistening yellow and perfectly cooked. Mushy peas, a worthwhile extra, were equally tasty, even if their luminous green colouring was slightly alarmingly. And while fried fish is the big draw here, the site itself is pretty charming too a bonus on a somewhat charmless stretch of Kingsland Road. A hand-painted sign, mauve shutters on the windows and a definite smell of vinegar wafting from the takeaway section combine to give the feel of being at the seaside. If you can resist getting your chips wrapped for home, eat in its a riot of nostalgia, all laminated menus, lacy tablecloths and smiling waitresses in pinnies. Faulkners has been going for years, and with good reason.
