Lola Rojo, on Battersea’s Northcote Road, is still a destination for cocina nueva-style Catalan small plates of Spanish food. Seven years on and the dishes are good, but it’s a busy and cramped little restaurant – expansion was the overdue solution.

Rosita is Lola Rojo’s new branch, just a few minutes’ walk away. But rather than duplicating the original’s menu, the husband-and-wife owners have produced a Madrid-style tapas menu with a more traditional approach – sherry and jamón are the stars. The sherry list can be tried as ‘flights’ of wines – three small but varied glasses of bone-dry finos, for example, or fuller-bodied manzanilla pasadas. These are perfectly matched to the bellota (acorn-fed) ham, which was well carved; or perhaps a piece of the leg of jamón hanging over the bar.

The cooked dishes are nearly as simple, such as the baked duck egg with spinach and goat’s cheese. A Josper grill sears seafood and meats, like our slab of Iberian pork. Rosita uses good ingredients and the dishes are very fresh. The chickpea mash, the firm and fresh patatas fritas with alioli, and the sultry piquillo peppers were all notably good. Less successful was the rubbery deep-fried calamari with batter that slid off. But most dishes far exceeded the tapas-bar norm.

On our visit, Rosita was filled with the sort of affluent incomers to Battersea who, just a few years ago, would rarely have ventured south of Chelsea. Now, Battersea’s tittle-tattle is of Russell Group universities and basement conversions, over clinked glasses of Pedro Ximénez.

Lola Roja's newest little sister, the focus here is firmly on the extensive range of sherry. Ask the waitress to talk you through the selection and you will come away knowing the difference between a Fino and a PX. Sherry goes great with toasted nuts and it's a great place to just sit at the bar and have a chat. If you want something more extensive, have the goat's cheese and tuna, it's divine. The tapas selection as a whole is good but a bit overly oily, and the selection is not good for vegetarians. But! It's reasonably priced (unlike Lola!) and the staff are lovely.

If you are looking for a fresh, beautifully cooked and authentic tapas experience, head to Rosita on Northcote road for the best tapas south of the river. 

The tapas selection is wide and varied, yet all incredibly tasty. From manchego lollipops, to aubergine fritters and gigantic grilled prawns, each dish is distinctive and bursting with flavour. And if you are a meatlover, you can drool over their extensive range of cured meats from Coppa to Iberico ham, all carved in front of your eyes for a salty, melt in the mouth, meaty fix. The stand out dish is the ceviche cod with tomato and bean salad which is an unusual but delicious addition to the menu.

Take a group of friends, order jugs of their tinto de verano (tastes like pure sunshine, I promise you!) and do tapas right with lots of dishes, friendly and knowledgeable staff in a cosy and warm atmosphere. 


I enjoyed some excellent grilled octopus and a tomato salad. Fresh, delicious and a good portion size. My partner had the set menu which was also excellent quality and generously portioned. The service was polite and friendly. I will be returning and would recommend Rosita's to family and friends.


I have never seen such shoddy service in a restaurant before. They were rude, inattentive and acted as though we were doing them a favour by being at their restaurant. The food was ok but the toro main was inedible- when we sent it back they said 'its meant to be like that'. Never again!


Totally agree with above. I went with my mother and she loved it - a few Finos and Palo Cortados later!!!
