This long-running restaurant (est. 1973) continues to draw people in search of good Malaysian cooking, and benefits from the warmth and smile of Fatizah Shawal, daughter of the original owners.
These days, the dining room is modern-looking, with grey and orange-red walls embedded with motifs of the hibiscus flower, but it’s still the place to come for traditional offerings such as sambal ikan bilis and petai – sun-dried young anchovies (ikan bilis) served with sator beans (petai) and spicy shrimp paste (sambal) – a dish guaranteed to thrill the taste buds. For a milder kick, try tahu sumbat, deep-fried tofu filled with beansprouts and cucumber, with a piquant nutty sauce.
Ikan panggang, whole mackerel stuffed with spices, grilled, then cut into a butterfly shape, had the oily fish and spiciness perfectly offset by a sour tamarind dip – a fond reminder of meals at the beach. To finish, bubur kacang is a comforting mung bean stew with coconut milk and a dash of palm sugar.

Managed to get my fix of chicken and lamb satay for now, tasty Nasi Goreng and chicken curry. The staff as friendly as always. Close my eyes take in the aroma and listen to the other guests in the restaurant and you would be forgiven for thinking you were actually back in Malaysia. Satay that takes me back to when I was a young boy by the pool at the Penang Swimming club and then more recently the chilled out Tanjong Jara Hotel on the east coast. How such a simple dish can bring back such amazing memories. Thank you to Fatizah and the team and look forward to seeing you again soon. Steve Sharp
This place is brilliant. I went for lunch here with a work colleague, I had the Ayam Masak Merah (chicken with sweet spicey tomato) which was bursting with flavour and absolutely gorgeous. Got a Rendang Daging (dry beef curry) to take home for my husband, and he completely adored it, the meat melted in your mouth and the gorgeous taste had penetrated the whole way through the meat - it was the best he'd ever tasted (and we've both love our asian food), it was even better than the dishes he'd had when we'd visted Malaysia. I'm defintely going to go out of my way to go back here - the food is completely saturated in gorgeous flavours. A great treat - definitely try their gorgeous authentic malaysian dishes.
We (3 of us) visited last Friday evening, the latest of several visits over the past few years. Warning signs were there in that it was easy to get a booking when we called the day before, and the restaurant was half empty. We ordered a selection of starters and mains, but the quality was poor - some of them were strangely flavoured and some were glutinous in texture. The best of a bad bunch was beef rendang. Out of all our visits this was the worst (food quality), disappointing when our previous visit last year was the best we had experienced! Others times have been variable, but generally OK. Most of the dishes were little better than standard high street take-away quality. An added issue was plates being cleared even when one person was still eating - even though we pointed this out! Satay House can be excellent, but we no longer have any confidence in introducing people to it, when at best it is so variable, and at worst, poor.
