Now that restaurants with contemporary Brit/Euro cuisine are two a penny, it’s great to discover one that really stands out. And even better in Stroud Green Road, more known for ultra-cheap eats and African veg stores.
The decor at Season Kitchen is modern-mellow, with subtle greys offset by a cranky collection of old paintings. The multinational staff are warmly friendly, and there’s a likeable generosity about the whole enterprise. Everything is own-made, including the fabulous, no-extra-charge bread (clearly a passion – as soon as we asked about the bread, we were offered the recipe).
Menus, as the name suggests, focus on seasonal ingredients, and are an unpindownable mix of British, Mediterranean and other influences. A winter vegetable terrine had loads of fresh green flavour; in a platter of own-cured meats the duck was superb. An outstanding main course of pulled kid (goat) came with deliciously smooth polenta, rich jus and a powerfully meaty faggot; smoked salmon with crispy seaweed was more conventional, but still very enjoyable. Also, the chips are superlative, the rhubarb and custard doughnuts delectable, and a low mark-up policy on wines provides exceptional bottles at remarkable prices. A place to be celebrated.

I have yet to eat a bad meal here. I love eating there after seeing a play at the local theatre. The staff are friendly and the chef knows how to please the palate. I love that I always expect to pay so much more for my meal than I do. Intimate, but not tiny. I happily return again and again, because I always leave full and happy!
Their menu is so refreshing. It changes frequently and is so original. Sophisticated simplicity in harmony with the seasons. These chefs really understand what sustainable food means.

Being a foodie from San Francisco, I was so delighted to find Season. Absolutely the best meal I have had in London and it will be hard to top it. The atmosphere was great, people very friendly and the food superb. I would challenge tourists to branch out a little and enjoy this delightful neighborhood.
I had drooled over the (regularly changing, seasonal and beautifully brief) menu for two years before eating here. Being a serious cook/foodie, I rarely eat out, and expect to have to pay prices I simply can't afford or justify to be impressed, So when I finally ate at Season I was nearly hysterical with joy. Bread and olives (on the house) arrived first. The best bread I have ever tasted, and my standards are high. Every bite of food was a joy. The superb quality of the ingredients shone through so clearly, all cooked to perfection in innovative yet unpretentious combinations. My faith in humanity was truly restored with their modest mark up on wine, I want these people to run the country.
I don't give a 5 mark easily but this gets it because the balance of everything is just right. I've been twice and each time the service has been attentive and friendly without being over bearing, the staff are clearly passionate about what they do, the atmosphere has been great (not too noisy and busy but not quiet and feeling like you're dining on your own) but most importantly the food is delicious and fantastic value for money for the quality (that goes for the wine too).
Should definitely be higher than 3! Food is excellent (much better than the vast majority of Islington's gastro-pubs), the staff & service are great, the wine list interesting and everything is very fairly priced. The menu may be short and occasionally slightly challenging, but that's part of what makes it stand out so much. A great neighborhood restaurant which is definitely worth a trip from further afield and fully deserves the local support it gets.
4 out of 5 please Time Out! A really lovely little place and all the better for being small - has that intimate quality which is replicated in the food too. A superb place!!!
Fantastic local restaurant with friendly staff, quick service and great food. The reasonably priced wine and good portions make Season great value. Our second visit was even better than our first. A must for anybody in the north London area!

I think the review is a little unfair. The food is excellent considering the reasonable price. The absolute, rather than percentage, mark up on the wine list means there are some excellent mid-price (around £20) wines that you wouldn't see elsewhere.
Definitely worth at least 4 stars, not 3 time out! We love season, best restaurant in stroud green area. We always go for special occasions, and it makes a good date as it is small without too many tables so won't get noisy/rowdy with big boozy parties and so feels intimate and romantic. You do pay for this quality, so the bill isn't really something many can afford very frequently, but it is value for money. The menu offers dishes that you might not have heard of, or at least they often use ingredients that you are unlikely to make at home. Refreshingly small but quality menu, so you don't spend 10 mins reading a load of similar boring choices. We live around the corner, so the concept of a constantly changing seasonal menu is very appealing for us, as regular local customers. It is like having a smart central london restaurant in your local neighbourhood.
This restaurant is such a little gem! Unbelievably delicious food, locally sourced, at great value. Generous portions, lovely waiting staff. My boyfriend's ox cheek with parsnip puree was the yummiest thing I've eaten in ages. How can you only give this place 3 stars Time Out?
I say 4 star not 3. Friendly well-informed service backs up excellent produce nicely presented and perfectly cooked. "Best venison ever" said one of four of us and we all enjoyed each course including rabbit stew, "duck ham" (ask!) and fab chips. Wine list limited and OK but perhaps more adventurous as Kitchen gets more confident? Make it confident. It's a gem (and I'm envious, living in Wimbledon). Over to you, north Londoners.
