Visited a few weeks ago with 3 girlfriends for a pub Sunday dinner. It had been a warm day so we wanted to go somewhere with a beer garden for the evening, opted for The Bickley.

I for one was very impressed by the size of the outdoor space, was much bigger than expected, there were plenty of tables and didn’t feel overcrowded – there was even a small outdoor play area for kids (not that we had any with us, but thought this was a nice touch).

We sat down on a bench table to look over the menu and all quickly decided on chicken pie so went to the bar to order and get some drinks. Not long after we’d sat back down the waitress soon came to apologise that they’d run out of pies much to our disappointment and politely asked to take our order again, so I chose the crab as my second choice and the other 3 ordered a roast chicken dinner. The food was served relatively quickly and looked amazing (100% worthy of a #foodporn on Instagram) – thankfully tasted just as good too! So we quickly put “pie-gate”, as we called it, behind us – to put a positive spin on the service, the staff were all very friendly and polite and we were not charged anything extra for our now more expensive main dishes.

However things took a turn for the worse when it came to dessert, only 3 of us were participating and all wanted the chocolate brownie – however there was only 2 of these left. We accepting that they must have has a busy day and that it was now into the evening so didn’t quibble, and to avoid any petty arguments got the both of them along with an Eton Mess and agreed to share between us. The brownies were nice but not the best I’ve ever had, but the Eton Mess was very disappointing as lacked any meringue whatsoever – was mostly just cream!! Especially as the food offerings were not cheap at all by any means, so we definitely expected better from the desserts.

Our experience was pleasant enough, but I wouldn’t rush to return – there are plenty of other nice gastro pubs in Chislehurst I’m sure can fulfil what they offer on the menu and probably more reasonably priced too!
