In the centre of London’s world famous West End, right on The Strand, the Amba Hotel Charing Cross occupies a grade II-listed building filled with grand old Victorian character and gloriously regal features worthy of Queen Vic herself. Opened in October 2014, The Terrace offers an all-day dining venue and bar where you can enjoy everything from classic afternoon tea to a specially shaken cocktail courtesy of our in-house mixologist. What ties every dining and drinking experience together is the fantastic views of the Strand below – something which has made our location a favourite with many for more than 150 years.

We visited the Terrace for afternoon tea on a sunny October Saturday. The room itself is light and airy, and if you're lucky enough to get a table by the window it offers views of Charing Cross, the Strand and even (in the distance) the National Gallery. We booked an offer for afternoon tea with sparkling wine for £24.50 per person, which was fairly good value. The sandwiches were substantial, with the smoked salmon bagel being particularly generous and delicious. The scones were small, but were served with plenty of jam and cream. The cakes were a tad uninspired and fairly stodgy - it would have been nice to have had something a little lighter and daintier. But all round it was tasty. What lets down the Amba chain slightly (we encountered the same at the Marble Arch hotel) is the service. The waiting staff and hostess were very friendly and brought all our food promptly. However, they didn't come back to see if we wished for any top ups, we had to ask for napkins, and generally it was less attentive than you would expect when having afternoon tea. However, it is a good deal for the price and still felt fairly decadent. It's a safe option for afternoon tea when you don't feel like paying the exorbitant prices of the top tier hotels.
