Set over two floors on the site of former brewery-bar Mash, this inaugural UK branch of the popular German chain offers floating fireplaces and ‘help yourself’ basil gardens to combat the fact that it’s essentially a fast-food restaurant – albeit one with smart seating and a swanky chip card, handed to you at the door, on which you clock whatever you order from the range of food court-style pizza and pasta bars, eventually paying when you leave. Food is gathered into groups A (very cheap) to D (quite cheap), although we found simple dishes the most successful: a large caprese pizza was crisp in the right places and subtly seasoned, while pasta with crayfish tails and lobster sauce was limp and strangely flavourless.
