South London hipsters continue to pack out this buzzing, bijou restaurant, making booking essential. Dark wooden tables, pews, and chairs bearing cross motifs are arranged around a tiled horseshoe bar, with stunning stained-glass windows looming over proceedings. Atmospheric, low lighting adds to the ecclesiastical vibe. But there's more to Angels & Gypsies than stylish decor, as hinted at by legs of serrano ham on display, and blackboards listing wines and specials. The menu combines Spanish classics with more imaginative creations, so dishes such as scallops, ginger oloroso and ibérico ham share space with gambas al ajillo and traditional tortilla. Food arrives on rustic crockery. Prawn croquetas with tender morsels of meat and a spiky habanero salsa hit the mark, while a meatball with melting manchego in its centre, surrounded by a tomatoey broth, was as unexpected as it was delicious. To drink, there's an interesting selection of wines, sherry and cava as well as an extensive list of rums from South America and the Caribbean. Prices are reasonable and the dress code casual. Camberwell has lucked out at last.

Havent got a bad word to say about the place. The service was fantastic, the atmosphere was brilliant and not to mention the food was absolutely delicious.
Do not even hesitate to book a table at this place!
Ate here for a special occasion and it was perfect. Great food, nice service and all in all overall good value. We had bottle of red wine, 5 dishes plus bread and water and it came to £50 between 2 of us. Lovely atmosphere, will be going back again.
We hired the Havana room for a private family bash for 20 people. It was SUPERB. the atnosphere was fun and friendly, but still special and teh food really is outstanding quality..and very generous too. Go here and tell everybody you know about it !
I would recommend to anyone - the food was amazing, tip might be to order a couple of dishes at a time as the tables are quite small if there's only two of you. Try the dry, chilled sherry to start with a plate of the hand carved iberico ham - heaven.
This is an amazing tapas restaurant with traditional and modern tapas the Black Bream is superb. They have a great wine and sherry list and all at reasonable prices. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. I took a party of 20 people there recently and they did not disappoint with their brilliant food and friendly service. This is a truly a great place to dine I have been many times and have always been impressed !
Have eaten here before and have always enjoyed the food, ambience and service but last weekend I held a party for 16 and Angels & Gypsies absolutely surpassed themselves. The food as usual dd not disappoint and my guests (some are chefs or work for fine food establishments) commented on the excellent quality and flavours, especially the Oyster Mushrooms and the Aged Longhorn Beef with Black Beans. The staff were attentive without being pushy and went out of their way to make the evening a resounding success. Definitely one of the best up and coming restaurants in South London, terrific value, inspired cooking (check out the specials), a solid wine list and amazing selection of Rums (try the 8yr old Peru)!
I couldn't disagree more with Sally Eva's comments. Angels & Gypsies is my local restaurant, and I've never had anything but the most welcoming, friendly, genuine service when eating there. Last time we went, we were greeted like old friends. There was no attempt at all at upselling - either in terms of the food or the wine. I happen to work in the wine trade, and know that the wines on the restaurant's (relatively brief) list represent pretty good value for money. Big glasses are par for the course if you have wines with big flavours and big aromas - which, on the whole, wines from Spain and Southern France tend to have. The food is always tasty - some dishes miss the mark, but the strike rate is way higher than the average. The atmosphere is warm and vibrant, and prices are reasonable. One last point - I've never taken anyone there who hasn't thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Perhaps Sally Eva went on an off night (restaurants occasionally have them too) - or maybe she was having an off night herself when she went.
great food, terrible service. Pushy, over-attentive, borderline contemptuous. Selling from the moment you walk through the door (before you've taken your coat off). Very long, very expensive wine list and wine glasses that would take half a bottle each. The antithesis of a genuine tapas atmosphere. Empanadas (pushed with big smiles within moments of arriving) very dull. The specials not special. Just terrible service.
Had a Great Birthday, , attentive service, with a varied selection of wonderful Tapas, favourites were the Razor Clams cooked Pacharan, and the Iberico Chorizo in the Hard Cider.Unusual to such a great appreciation of Latin rums here as well.......was very happy to finish the evening with a Guatemalan Zacapa Gran Reserva. :)
This place is fantastic. Really lovely interesting food at good prices and enough choices to keep this vegetarian very happy - aubergine dish is gorgeous.
Highly recommended,
Went on Saturday, heard about through a friend. Theres parking opposite as it can be tricky. We sat at the bar and were treated to some outstanding tapas. A watermelon and Cows cheese salad with Mizuno leaves was so refreshing and was comped by the chef as a taster. Loved the giant butterbeans, lamb cutlets, tunar tar. All splendid. Really surprised by the standard of food, very unexpected although saying that have heard so much about this place. Staff need to work on their English but didnt bother me added to the authenticity.
We orderd two bottles greedily of the Mascon Rose, anyway was the french Rose they have so goood. Kinda dont want too many people knowing about this place in fear it will lose its appeal but hey!!

Visited last night with family and had the most laughable evening. Food was great when it finally arrived but came over two and a half hours in no particular order! They obviously have problems and need to buy more white wine glasses. Other people were obviously having the same sort of problems and at one stage the waiting staff disappeared.
We went there soon after it opened and were surprised by the quality of the food. We returned just a few days ago and had some wonderful food. But it took a long time to get it; it arrived with unexpected delays; the wine eventually arrived late and three dishes we ordered later never turned up. We were bought several dishes twice and were offered things we had not ordered. The food is very good but the service is appalling. We will never go back.
I've lived in Camberwell for three years and you can see the start of a middle class/art student takeover of bars and clubs on the main drag. It still feels genuinely boho as opposed to Shoreditch which is now an overcrowded toilet. This eaterie is part of that new trend. BTW, Vauxhall may be the new gay bar capital but not Camberwell. There is a difference.

I took my boyfriend to Angels and Gypsies for dinner yesterday for his birthday and the food was absolutely delicious. Every dish we had was spot on with lovely flavours and healthy too. The wine was superb. Really genuine staff and the restaurant itself is beautiful inside. So happy this is just down the road from us. Highly Recommended!!!
Been meaning to go for while now arrived early at 630. Food was to die for, razor clams the best Ive had and a tapas dish of steak, black beans and fried quails egg out of control. Excellent house red at a steal 14 pounds coud of drunk three bottles. Definatley going back. Very chilled ambience makes a change.
Couldnt disagree more. with Trish Peat.I have been twice now in quick succession, and both times have had excellent food, great wine and really genuinely lovely service.. well worth the (small) expense..
had a great birthday there, staff were wonderful, food was great, with even my veggie friends being very content for a change.
Just stayed there, not very friendly, once we had finished our meal no bar or lounge to have a drink in as it had been taken over for a restaurant. Quirky decor does not make up for average food in the restaurant and smug unfriendly staff.
