Faulkner's feels like a relic of the Kingsland Road that's currently being swept away by a wave from the north, leaving in its wake fashionable bars, cafés and boutiques. The takeaway on the left-hand side does a brisk trade; the restaurant features white tablecloths, heavy napkins, branded crockery and net curtains. Above, fake beams stripe the artex ceiling.
Tropical fish watch from their tank, as fried or grilled portions of their distant relatives are served to diners; the menu also advertises jellied eels, oysters and mussels. This sort of nostalgic dining experience is brilliant if the food matches up, but we can't say it always does. Battered haddock came crispy and fresh, but scampi seemed to have rested in a freezer on its way to the plate, and the less said about the wimpy, pallid chips the better.
The food is by no means terrible, but Faulkner's has that curious combination of formality and disappointment that characterises so many traditional British establishments.

A not so hidden gem in the middle of Dalston. Where else would you find Prime Halibut of the World alongside homemade fishcakes? No-where. And when you add the talents of the frying man, psychic Natasha and other matey (who work tirelessly and with great humour in the takeaway section) this that makes Faulkner a very special place.
