Plonked in the middle of a housing estate, Fish Central has been serving fish 'n' chips for decades, but these days it's a rather more upmarket spot: tables are clothed and adorned with fresh flowers; diners are treated to an amuse-bouche of, say, a salmon bite; and, if you haven't booked, you might have to settle for a takeaway.
On our visit, a group of taxi drivers (clearly regulars) began with buttered rolls and wallies (pickled cucumbers), but could have opted for jellied eels or something a little more exotic.
Our slightly undercooked pan-fried scallops were delicious, sweet and juicy, though the freshly made salsa verde lacked poke. Traditional cod and chips was excellent: an enormous fillet in crispy batter and a great pile of crunchy-outside, fluffy-inside chips. The special of turbot (one of very few sustainable fish on the menu), served in a creamy chive sauce with fried fennel, was another success.
Portions are huge, service solicitous and the special menus a bargain.
