Kipferl
Having relocated from a tiny site in Barbican to a large and bright space in Angel, Kipferl now has plenty of room to accommodate its many admirers. They come for Austrian and Central European classics, and the notably stylish café serves them with aplomb.
A zingy, spiced debreziner sausage (you can also get the standard wiener, or a kasekrainer with nuggets of emmental cheese) came with extremely good rye bread, pickle, horseradish and salad. The goulash, with its thick chunks of beef, rich sauce and egg pasta, could put hairs on your chest. If fact, everything on the menu, from dumpling soup to mountain cheese omelette, is hearty and homely.
If you're after something lighter, stay towards the front of the café, where Viennese patisserie (exemplary sachertorte, apfelstrudel and the like) are served with coffee. Interestingly, a colour palette is provided to help you decide how strong you like your coffee; your drink then arrives, the traditional way, on a little metal tray with a glass of water. Polished, authentic and charming.

Tables outdoors ( 2, pavement ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Available for hire, Disabled ( toilet ), Takeaway serviceI am a regular at Kipferl and it is normally a very nice place. Went there today and was greeted by a very grumpy waitress who bumped into me but just walked off shaking her head. She barely spoke to us, stomped around in a mood and practically threw the coffees at us. We braved it and told her it was freezing but she muttered the heating hasdn't been working for days! No apologies - just a 'what do you expect me to do' attitude. We then began to ask her if she had any pretzels but she assumed we were asking again about the ehating and got very offensive. Perhaps she only had a bad day as she has been there since the start and is normally cheerful but please fix the heating and then the mood may improve too!
Excellent in every way.
Hearty delicious food, home made cakes and best coffee in London...by far.
Definitely will return!
great place, great food, great variety of meals, coffees, wine and cakes! haven't been there for the first time with my kids! very very child-friendly team!
It is an okay place to go for breakfast, however I miss Macondo a lot. That place is not very child-friendly unfortunately. we might be back for a coffee but for a nice breakfast we go somewhere else.
Had a fantastic brunch on Saturday morning, great coffee selection and huge omelet. Service was very friendly and the variety on the menu will need a few more visits to do justice
