Bare brickwork, metal deep-fat fryers and a queue of cabbies distinguish the busy takeaway counter at the entrance to this no-frills chippy. The retro feel is continued by the wipe-clean tables and wilted hanging plants of the conservatory-like dining room, with its collection of celebrity photos (Ian McShane, Lenny Henry).

The menu lists several more exotic options than the takeaway, including cod in mustard batter and various grilled fish (swordfish, tuna steak). The accompaniments, however, are of the back-to-basics ilk. Three chewy baguette slices and cooked king prawns arrive as complimentary starters. Mains are served along with metal jugs filled with ketchup and tartare sauce; staff offer to heap pickled gherkins and onions on to plates. Portion sizes are vast. A Masters '247g piece of cod' special was unfinishable, and a crisply battered rock salmon was the size of a house brick.

Most tables were empty on our Saturday afternoon visit, but just as we finished, tables were hastily crammed together as a coach-load of pensioners descended.

Save your money and grab a sarnie in Pret. I've never been served up such bilge in all my life! An oversized portion of chips (green in places, tasteless and awful) and a piece of Halibut that had seen better days (didn't look at all fresh, like a freezer block of fish). I would not be dragged back to this place for a FREE meal. Fish Central has always been my fave and this (one and only) visit to Masters was solely due to Old Vic theatre tickets. Never, EVER again.

excellent fish! take away is great value - especially as a master's special is quite ample for two even quite hungry mouths - but even if you want to pig out and go it alone its still pretty cheap. chips aren't great however. Can't really comment on the service as i hardly ever eat in. As for the comment below about lazy cooking - i can't say i'd agree with this- at a push i might apply it to the chips (i always think they could do with an extra minute or so), but the fish is almost always spot on, and delicious.

It's gone off, recently. Despite lazy cooking and haphazard service, it's still full, often with pensioner outings and coach parties, which means that if you can't eat what they bring you - for example if the fish is grey and foul-tasting - they still charge you for it.

If geography isn't important - Kennedy's in Islington and Fish Central near the Barbican are infinitely superior in this price bracket.

Dined here last week when staying at the Travelodge 2 or 3 doors up the road. Delicious food, very efficient service, great value. I'll be back.

Masters is the Best Fish & Chip shop in London. Everything is cooked to order so you have to wait a bit, but it's well worth the wait. The fish is always perfectly cooked, as are the chips. If you eat in, you get free shrimps and bread, and wallys are offered if you want them. RECOMMENDED

Regular visitor every time I visit London. Service can be slow when the crowds decend upon the place, but nevertheless, the restaurant wants you to eat and leave so someone else can have your table. So service will happen. Portions are generous.

I always take friends visiting from abroad to Masters and have not had a complaint yet. It must be the best chippy in London.
