Mem & Laz's founding father Memet is expanding his property along Theberton Street, and soon the lovely, throbbing sea cabin that is Mem & Laz - hung with coloured lanterns and West End posters - will cover a glorious 400sq ft. There's a pile of hot bread, shot through with sun-dried tomatoes or prunes, before you even pick up the menu. Whole sardines marinated in lemon juice and coriander are an engaging first encounter, and the seafood casserole is a broad sweep across the ocean bed, set in a delicate tomato sauce and served in an iron skillet. Chargrilled chicken breast, served in a thick honey and mustard sauce, tasted more like a buttery korma than anything even vaguely Mediterranean, but was deliciously moreish all the same.

i first visited mem and laz on a dear friends birthday, found the whole atmosphere, food and service to be great and even better when the staff made us all dance on our seats to celebrate her birthday. since then i have gone back for 2 other birthdays, my own birthday and a valentines.amazing food with the tagliatelle a personal favorite. The fact they are expanding is a sign of the great quality they continue to provide. in an area where i swore never to visit a restaurant more than once, i keep returning at least for their homemade custard and apple pie! highly recommended.

We were looking for a friendly place with a local feel to take some friends visiting for dinner and this hit the spot. Well sized tasty portions, good service that wasn't pushy or rude as other reviewers have mentioned and reasonable prices for London. The food was consistently well executed but it is more local taverna rather than fine dining. But we visited on a busy Saturday night and, sure the service was a little slow but the atmosphere more than made up for it.

We love this place - until yesterday I had never been there at lunchtime and probably will not do so ever again. It wasn't the food, service or ambiance that makes me write this review - but the disgraceful behaviour of some of the children there. I blame the parents. If your children are badly behaved or too young - don't take them out to eat. It is both selfish and thoughtless and not fair on other diners. The place is not a creche. I suggest that children and buggies are accommodated upstairs maybe? This experience was very disappointing, especially as I had brought a friend who had never been to Mem & Laz before

In my opinion this place started off well, great food and good value with friendly staff. As time passed Mem and Laz has become increasingly busy however the owner seems to have become greedy adding more table to a small space has made the place cramped and uncomfortable. The last time we visited I had my chair bashed four times by staff who didn't even say sorry. The time before that my coat was knocked on to the floor. again no apology was made.

While eating you will notice your glasses are continuously topped up regardless of whether you are ready and as soon last you have taken your last mouthful you are offered another drink. My plate was also taken from the table whilst I was still chewing! its very rushed and you will see staff waiting on your plates.

Its a great shame because the food is nice however I doubt I will return as it has become uncomfortable and rushed. The food is not good enough to warrant the atmosphere.

This is a firm favourite local haunt of ours. Great value for money, they have a set menu where you can choose anything for a main and anything for a starter for £6.95 ( i think £1 more for dessert/weekends). The home made chilli sauce is fantastic. The staff are friendly and efficient and the atmosphere is always lively and enjoyable. We are so glad that they are expanding, the place seems to be getting busier every week!Great spot altogether. Highly recommend.

The food at this restaurant was simply amazing. My fiancee and I have eaten in many of the highly recommended restaurants in London and this is one of the best.

As far as the service is concerned, everything was delivered fast and the staff was very helpful. We had an incident while at the restaurant and my Fiancee needed some help, the staff was extremely helful and very caring! We are very grateful for their help.

I cannot reccommend this restaurant enough!

I went there last nite for a lovely meal. I mean it was full of chaos and packed to th rim. But the atmosphere and service is what made it quite enjoyable. The staff were all smiles and looked hard at work to please.
There was a party going on in which the whole restaurant got to join in the festivities.
The food was lovely, i only ordered a man in which was a good idea as the portion was just enough to full me up but not over doing it.
Not ideal for a quiet meal but definatly lifts your spirits. I would reccommend for parties.
I would go there again just for the food.

As a couple, we went out for a nice meal to celebrate... From start, we were pestered by waitor's with their sales tatics to get us to order extra or side dishes before starter. and when we eventually ordered, we ordered only main and no starter he didn't look pleased. after our main course, we were asked if we could move to a smaller table because there was a bigger group that they wanted to accomodate. charming!! we thought ok, not to be selfish. but it happened that they tricked us to move because they were not setting table for a group but a few couples (maybe regulars) and one couple that didn't want the small table by the bar (the one we got).
whilst we were at that table, waiters were going by with hot plates over our head and we weren't happy then. We complained to manager that the waiters first lied to us and then put us in an uncomfortable and hazardeous place. all he came up with was 'i'm sorry and if you are not happy we cannot do anything for you and we have other customers to attend'. we were shocked and said that if he didn't need our custom then we will not come to nor recommend this place. he comes out with 'this is your decision we have our customers and it is fine if you do not want to come here again'. all that in a packed full restaurant. would you go there?
