Suggesting that Meze Mangal doesn't look like much from the outside is a pretty generous understatement. Happily, the rather decrepit exterior of this informal Lewisham favourite gives way to a pair of slightly more pleasant rooms - one at ground level and the other in the basement - and to a team of staff who don't miss a beat in delivering good-quality Turkish cooking to a clientele drawn largely from the neighbourhood. The focus of the traditional menu is split between grills and pide, and you can't go wrong with either. In particular, the lamb sis was excellent: high-quality meat, nicely seasoned and then grilled to a succulent finish. Pide are cooked to a gentle crisp in a capacious brick oven; the sebzeli peynirli pide, including cheese and spinach, is probably the best vegetarian choice on the entire menu (which, as you might expect, is otherwise heavy on the meat). Skip the starters in order to save room for a nice, creamy and made-on-site sütlaç. Every table was booked on the Saturday we visited, with plenty of Turks among the diners. It's easy to see why.

We always love eating here as a group, we just love the atmosphere, menu, and the fact that you can see your meal being prepared and to smell all the wonderful aromas it just works

We are locals to this place and, despite trying other turkish restaurants within the area, this is the best by a mile!

The service is consistently brilliant - all the staff are kind, attentive and go over and above to make you happy. The food is fresh, tasty and authentic, with a great selection of pide or kebabs which are chargrilled right in front of you. They strike a unique balance - the reason you leave so stuffed is not just because the portion is generous, but because you do not want to leave a single crumb.

This is a real gem right in the heart of Lewisham - from its authentic turkish coffee to its wonderful homemade breads and humus, this place has the details bang on. I just cannot fault it, I really can't.

Excellent. We booked a table for 4. Great choice of food which all arrived at our table promptly and it was all extremely tasty! Large portions, very friendly staff, reasonably priced. What more could a hungry person want?

Having just returned from a week in Istanbul, and suffering withdrawal symptoms from my daily helping of humus I was delighted to be introduced to Meze Mengal by a friend last night. On reaching the restaurant I was somewhat apprehensive but have learned that unprepossessing exteriors often hide culinary treasures, and so it transpired. The restaurant was friendly, the staff and owner very welcoming and the food well presented and delicious. I chose a chicken sis to follow our plate of humus served with delicious bread, and it came with a generous portion of tasty salad. Accompanied by two glasses of Efes and with a cup of sweet Turkish coffee to end the meal, I came away delighted to find another "favourite" to which to return.

My partner & I ate at the restaurant last night. We did not book, but were able to be offered a table for two later in the evening as the place was full on arrival. The staff were hospitable & welcoming & the owner was delightful, offering complimentary drinks( birthday treat). The ambience & food were most enjoyably authentic. A real gem in an unremarkable stretch of lewisham way, having earlier had a pleasant pre-prandial apperitif at the newly opened Talbot gastro-pub nearby! Walked off the meal by walking over a star lit Hilly Fields on the way home.
