A combination general store, deli and caff, Paul Rothe & Son - established in 1900 - is English in the best sense of the word: polite, concerned with quality and open to cultural influences. This family enterprise exemplifies old-school hospitality: from the blackboard beckoning in passers-by to the professional shopkeepers, dressed in white coats, who greet customers like old friends. Shelves are packed with homely jams, relishes and biscuits, as well as unexpected items like Krakus Polish pickles. Patrons cover the spectrum from cabbies and tourists to well-heeled Marylebone shoppers. Most come for proper cups of tea and standard sandwiches - from egg salad to kummelkase (a blend of stilton, cream cheese and caraway) - served on rye, granary, wholemeal or white bread.
