This two-room workers' caff majoring in fish and chips serves its appreciative Lewisham clientele (mainly market workers and shoppers) with pride. The Formica tables and plastic chairs are as clean and bright as the blue-tiled floor and fishy-themed wall decor.
Service was brisk and friendly, and the food consists of spanking fresh fish (the classics, including skate) cooked to order in gloriously crisp batter - or simply steamed for diners with a regard for their waistline.
Chips, fluffy and golden, come in three portion sizes; fish, where appropriate, in two. Mash is served in a gargantuan mound to accompany Pukka pies or, more interestingly (if all too rarely ordered), jellied eels. Most punters have little room left for the choice of traditional puds, though a cuppa goes down nicely.
