A short distance from the Vietnamese restaurant corridor that runs north from Shoreditch, Tre Viet on more mundane Mare Street lacks the manic explosion of drunken youth attracted to its hipper cousins - and benefits from it enormously.
Staff are patient and friendly, fellow diners a broad mix of locals, all tucking into an equally broad menu that ranges across the expected Vietnamese dishes (pho, summer rolls), but also includes goat and galangal, along with old oriental stalwarts that seem to be present because people insist on ordering them. If you find peking duck served with less pomp than here, let us know - the duck arrived pre-shredded and the pancakes still sealed in their plastic microwave wrapping.
But there are some cracking dishes to be had; the aubergine hotpot with tofu and/or minced pork is a thing of rich, silky beauty, and laudable too are the noodle soups and the soft-shell crab. So while Tre Viet may not offer the most authentic Vietnamese cuisine to be found in London, it handles the influences that have shaped it well. Hence you're unlikely to have a dull or tasteless meal here.

Booking advisable ( weekend ), Disabled ( toilet ), Takeaway serviceMe and my friends have been coming here for years from when they were first started in the smaller Tre Viet but now they've expanded into a more spacious restaurant with better service than before. Previously the service was slow but Ive got to say that its improved a lot what it was before. They've even started to introduce Bubble tea which is a flavoured juice with jelly balls in them! We are addicted to them! It's always busy in here which is a good sign as we're having to book our tables on the weekend. Overall I think that the service have improved immensely and its very affordable for the quality of the food that you get.
Not recommended. It took 45 minutes for our starters to arrive-- and then my boyfriend's starters was wrong. My meal arrived 15 minutes later-- an hour after we ordered. This was on a Wednesday night! My boyfriend's meal never arrived at all. We walked out.
A very overpriced and quite frankly disappointing meal. I asked for their specialty and was directed to their pho with beef. What I got was a paltry offering compared to some other Vietnamese pho restaurants I've been to. The slices of beef were disgusting--over 80% fat or skin (not even tendon), and the meat that was there was tough and stringy. There were only a few sprigs of Vietnamese basil and a small handful of bean sprouts on the side. There also wasn't much in terms of noodles in the bowl either (again in comparison to the normal amount offered). All this for 7 quid?? What a ripoff!! I definitely will NOT be back again. And as for authenticity, I guess I should've been tipped off when I went in during the lunch hour and saw no Asian clientele. Jing and Nancee--I bet you guys are affiliated with the restaurant.
My company and I were very dissappointed in the quality of food and the service. Will not go there again.
Being of ethnic southeast Asian origin, this by far is the best Vietnamese I've had in London. You don't get a more authentic Vietnamese food and ambience than this. If you are looking for atmospheric restaurant, this is not the place to be. Expect typical Asian customs, loud, lacking atmosphere, DVD sellers. And totally agree Jing's comments about ratings!
I was once a regular at this restaurant but now will not return. I ordered the Sizzling Fillet of Monkfish and was presented with pieces of dry, deep fried and battered pieces of white fish which tasted of nothing much really. I asked for the dish to be returned as I did not want nor order deep fried battered pieces of fish and I was told it was not deep fried. After speaking to the manager, she told me it was in fact deep fried and that she'd never had a complaint in 7 years and refused to change it or take it back. She left it on the table and walked away. After much 'discussion' I refused to pay for the dish and we left, never to return. This place is not what is once was and the way I was treated was quite extraordinary!
Sick and tired of going into restaurants like this and people being allow to walk in selling DVDs, I wish the staff would stop this. I don't want my meal interrupted 4 times because someone is selling fake DVDs
Having tried all the Vietnamese 5-start restaurants I think I don't totally agree with your criteria (specially Asian food).
I think Tre Viet deserves at least 4 stars if you've rated the 5- starts as 5 starts! It's cheap, big portion, tasty. I keep going there almost once a week and it becomes my canteen now (when I'm too lazy to cook).
Try that 'Hue spicy pork and beef noodles', and 'Fried prawn rice' (on the last page of the menu, can't remember its full name accurately, sorry), 'Chargrilled pork, spring roll and rice vermicelly'... Absolutely yummy! Best restaurant on Mare street.
BTW, I'm very sorry to say, the rating of Chinese restaurants in London is completely wrong!!
