With its lurid, tightly packed interiors and filmic soundtrack, you might mistake Apollo Banana Leaf for just another curry house, but looks can be deceptive. True, the laminated menu contains mainstream interlopers such as chicken tikka, but that's not where the kitchen's heart - or skill - lies.

The Sri Lankan crew showcase the best of their native cuisine, with a focus on seafood, vegetables and the odd bit of mutton. Kick off with traditional 'short eats' (street snacks) such as breaded cutlets (fish cakes) spiked with green chilli and curry leaves, or moreish deep-fried mutton rolls (giant croquettes) combining tender, full-flavoured meat and soft potato.

Disappointingly, the edges of our plain dosa were soggy, rather than wafer-thin and crisp, but the stuffed masala version won plaudits for its filling of mustard seed-studded crushed potatoes.

Other highlights include a shell-on crab curry - hugely messy but worth doing battle with, both for the sweet morsels of meat and the rich, creamy sauce -and a terrific dish of whole spiced ladies' fingers (okra).

Sweet-natured service, ludicrously cheap prices and a no-corkage BYO policy all increase the appeal.

Been twice. Unfortunately, dissapointed on both counts. Last visit I had Masala Dosa which is usually a very safe bet in Tooting's South Indian restaurants. However ABL's version was soggy and tasted cheesy? The sambar and coconut chutney was the worst I've ever had. Very disappointing.
On a positive note the service is good and the channa masala from my first visit was also good.

Having worked for many years in Sri Lanka and also having been to the Banana Leaf in Racecourse Avenue, Singapore which is my favourite asian restaurant in the whole world, I can safely say that the Banana Leaf in Tooting compares very favourably both on quality, quantity and cost.

Just went to diner for the first time at ABL. I was knocked out by the crab masala which was the messiest dish i have ever eaten in a restaurant - but really tasty. Exceptional value.

My wife and I lived for 5 months in Colliers Wood while on sabbatical from our American universities. Once we discovered ABL we didn't bother with any other Indian restaurants. The food is incredible, the service friendly, and the prices amazing (even by American standards the meals are cheap; by London standards a meal there is virtually free). Don't miss the cashew pakodas, the mutton stringhoppers, and the crab masala (although be aware that the crab dishes are as messy as they are delicious). They will provide glassware for whatever beer or wine you bring, so take your own booze and have a great evening. You will spend less than you would just for drinks at a place in central London, and have much better food.

I am from a Sri Lankan Tamil background, and my mum is renowned for her cooking - friends used to beg me to come over my house to try it!

I have left my mother behind in Australia and I thought that would mean I had left her fantastic home cooked food behind too... until i discovered Apollo Banana Leaf. Seriously, I found this place early in 2009, and have been back so many times I've lost track. My sister insists i get her takeaway every time I go.

This stuff genuinely satisfies my cravings for mum's cooking, the service is excellent, the price is unbelievable and i don't want to spend money on flashy decor. Everyone I've taken there, or recommended this place to, has only had good things to say! 5 stars for me!!

The decor maybe a little unusual but, aside from that, at the time of writing (March 2010) this really is a first class establishment. With comfortable surrounds underpinned by friendly and knowledgeable staff, ABL produce a fascinating array of Sri Lankan dishes with little or no delay between placing an order and the covers arriving. Moreover, at a typical cost of two or three pounds for a starter, this is a golden opportunity to sample a wide range of high quality authentic fare. Exquisite food and fabulous value, this venue is highly recommended and well worth a visit - just remember to take your own beer!
