Very much a venue that trades on its ambience, this buzzy, pan-European Soho eaterie goes all out for romantic intimacy. The dark wooden interior of the gently lit front room leads to a narrow staircase; downstairs is a low-ceilinged dining area, where small tables are decorated with bunches of flowers, and wax-spattered, candle-filled wine bottles provide most of the lighting. Diners are closely packed, meaning the soundtrack to a meal is the loud buzz of conversation from a couples-heavy crowd.
Cooking is highly variable. A portion of pleasing, spice-marinated octopus was garnished with dry chorizo that had been cooked down to the size of 5p pieces. Veal-stuffed chicken leg, already salty, was marred by an even saltier gravy. Best was precision-poached turbot, served with a punchy, tarragon-heavy tartare sauce, and coarsely processed mushy peas.
Service was friendly and attentive, although not very well informed about the menu. Our questions had to be relayed to the chef, with the waiter's (charmingly delivered) explanation being, 'I don't cook'.

Tables outdoors ( 2, pavement ), Babies and children admitted, Booking essentialThis is a Restaurant that pretentiously insists you book no more than a week in advance, rings you on the day to confirm your reservation, then when you rock up at the allotted time, tell you your table isn't ready. No apologies, no "have a complimentary drink to allevoate your inconvenience" more "just wait utill we tell you and then you can go to your table". Some would describe this place as cosy, intimate and romantic. I would describe it as cramped, noisy and claustrophobic.
When we were eventually allowed to sit down, the food was no less enthralling than their rude staff. Crab spaghetti that tasted of absolutely nothing, and steaks, though tender, had no flavour at all and one member of the party enjoyed their sea bass. Because of its location, this Restaurant doesn't care whether you come back or not, and therefore acts accordingly.
Unromantic. Tiny and tightly crammed. Everyone sits very close to their neighbours. We sat between two couples who talked so loudly and continually that my dining partner and I struggled to hear each other speak. Not good for a first date. Booking process was agreeable. Food was satisfying.
A truly fantastic experience, the food was fantastic and considering the quality and location very good value. It is a small place and the staff were occasionally a bit absent minded with menus and bills but never when it came to our food. The size adds to the experience when you get hit by the smells of other peoples food and hear them having a great time. It is quite fast paced but when it was clear my date and I were in no hurry to move on we turned down desert and no one asked us to move on aftertwo and a half hours. I would always recommend Andrew Edmunds.
Atmospheric restaurant, very knowledgeable and friendly staff and delicious food which is reasonably priced. Wine is positively cheap for the quality too. What more could you want? A tad more space for sure but otherwise, very fine.
My experience is the complete opposite of that above. I dined there with a guest on 2nd November
I wanted a table for the same evening that I made the phone call. The person who took my booking was helpful - he even took time for jokey banter about the fact that a table was available because of a cancellation just prior to my call.
We were late (should have anticipated this - I have never known the person who I was taking to be on time for anything!). I phoned ahead and the woman who took my call was charming and gracious. They kept the table for the extra 45 minutes that we needed.
The food was excellent! The service attentive without being intrusive. The wine list...well, I wish that I had taken more time to explore it.
My only slight niggle is that the table that I selected from the two on offer was near the stairs that lead to the kitchen. It was just a tad 'busy' and at one point my guest nearly got hit with a plate as a server stumbled. Given that neither I nor my guest were relaxed when we arrived, I think that the location of the table just kept us on edge a bit....
BUT - I will be going again. This is such an unusual and quirky place and it certainly stands out from the larger restaurants in the area. I eat out fairly often from necessity and am rather jaded by the 'same old offering' in ambience and cuisine that I see - even in London.
This is a charming, truly local restaurant. Yes, it is very small and slightly 'weird' but I found the food and service to be excellent. I struggle to remember which place I went to last Saturday - I have no problem remembering the full experience at Andrew Edmunds!
From the person who took the phone booking and offered a two hour early evening slot to the service through the meal this was a thoroughly unfriendly experience that left our party feeling cheated out of what should have been a good Saturday night meal. While the food was perfectly decent and the wine good, the staff seemed concerned only with the table that was booked after ours, twenty minutes before our slot was up (and that's how it felt) we were told to order pudding even though one of us had not finished their main course. We then ordered to find strangely that every hot pudding – treacle tart, sticky toffee pudding, apple crumble was suddenly not available – we're talking here of 8:45pm. Instead we were offered dishes that would clearly have taken less time for us to eat and so ensure we were off our table at 9 sharp. We felt totally rushed and unwelcome and we would strongly recommend only going to this restaurant on a later sitting to ensure you're actually able to enjoy it. Vile attitude from the maitre d' down to the phone guy. Reminds me of all the things I hate about London.
