Bea's of Bloomsbury is a fast-expanding café, with new branches on the King's Road in Chelsea and at One New Change in the City. But it's this original in Bloomsbury which is the best, not least because it's the source of all those spectacular gateaux and special occasion cakes - the busy, and sometimes noisy, kitchen and bakery occupies the rear half of the long and narrow space.
Choose your seat in the long corridor facing the counter carefully, as the tables nearest the front bear the brunt of the constant bustle of takeaway customers; further back the room's only slightly cosier.
But people don't come to Bea's for the ambience (the tables are wipe-clean bare, though not always spotless) or for the service (frosty on our most recent visit) - they come here for the cakes.
The 'sweet tea' at £12 comprised a double-decker of plates; the lower deck a too-crumbly scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam, the upper deck a more impressive display of confections. Among them were a moist cupcake the colour of dried blood; a tiny square of peanut and jam brittle; tiny, jewel-bright meringues; a dice-sized brownie, and some wobbly, caramel-coloured marshmallow. All of these were impeccably made with top- quality ingredients.
The Jing tea selection also does the trick. The full afternoon tea, with savoury eats, is only served at weekends at the St Paul's branch.

Having past Beas's many times ,I decided to take my son their yesterday .
St Pauls:
No welcome at all. In fact i would advice they sack all the staff and managers and start again. The tables seemed not be be cleared or cleaned fast enough. To the point i did it myself so we could sit down. Staff noticed and never even mentioned
it. .
Coffee was very good . Cakes no better than what you can buy at most farmers markets etc . That does not mean they where bad etc , Just a bland selection .
Price wise it was ok for the location. But again.... seriously bad customer service .
Would i visit again? Yes , with hope they can invest in better staff as much as the location deserves. Coffee and pastry offer in the morning is very good value
I went with an open mind and willing to spend a decent amount but the cold, rude woman who ignored me while serving people to my left and right and actually rolled her eyes when I asked a question made me realise they couldn't give a fig about customers. The item I left with crumbled into dry, tasteless crumbs.
We went for afternoon tea on 31st August and our first impressions were not good! The interior was very jaded and not altogether clean. There was no table linen and the furniture shabby. The fact that we could see the kitchen staff at work did nothing to improve our first impression. The food and tea were pleasant, but lacked the 'afternoon tea' experience we had expected. wouldn't recommend and certaily won't visit again.
Bea's is a wonderful experience and a taste of paradise
Visited both the branch in St. Paul and the in Bloomsbury a couple weeks ago. Bea's in Bloomsbury was a disappointment. It was dusty, glass surfaces were dirty and it was crowded. In great need of a renovation. We had afternoon tea and it tasted very good but didn't really compensate for the lack of atmosphere.
Bea's St. Paul's on the other hand was clean and fresh. Nice, bright settings. I had a beetroot and chevré pie for lunch and drank hot chocolate. Very good. A bit surprising was that many of the tables were booked, but despite that it was an hour left until the guests would arrive, no one else was allowed to sit there. The staff was not so friendly. A shame really, because the cakes and the food taste great!
visited St. Pauls branch and had high expectations but was underwelmed by the place. The food was average and the placed lacked any real atmosphere.
Visited 10.02.2011 as this was recommended to us and was appalled at the standard of cleanliness. the staff were rude, i did keep checking that they were still open as they seemed keen to be rid of us. Tables, chairs and floor dirty with crumbs etc. coffee and cakes average. Thouroughly over rated,
I have traveled the world and not found better than Bea's hot chocolate and mocha drinks. You can't go wrong with any of their (Square Mile) coffee's either. Highly recommend a visit for a drink and fabulous cakes, great eat-in lunches or great take-away food. Exceptional!
I went here on Saturday and walked out almost immediately. I am not in the habit of writing bad reviews, but I feel I must let other people know how rude the staff were. I was made to feel most unwelcome and will not be returning!
Enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea in this very cute shop. Keep going back for cupcakes, so yummy!
