The tiny lanes between Richmond Green and the high street are full of delightful little surprises, though you'll be forewarned about Gelateria Danieli by the queue extending from the door on warm summer days.
Two dozen flavours of superior gelato and sorbet are available at one time, drawn from a house list of more than 100 recipes. Standards, such as Sicily-grown pistachio and the not-guilty pleasure of dairy-free chocolate sorbet, are supplemented by seasonal berry sorbets in summer and more fanciful inventions such as Christmas pudding ice-cream.
Wooden floorboards and a couple of chairs inside make it cosy in winter and at quieter times, when you can also enjoy a coffee without feeling too cramped; if the weather's good, you'll be happier lazing about on the Green, watching the cricketers, tub in hand.
