Gastropub: African

So popular has Gold Coast proven, owner William Quagraine has opened another restaurant in Brixton (multi-location African eateries are extremely rare in London). The upstairs dining area at the Norwood branch now only operates at weekends, but in the ground-floor gastropub, you can enjoy a full menu alongside an impressive selection of Ghanaian beers and spirits. Service lacks vitality but is very friendly. The menu features Ghanaian staples such as palm nut soup (a thick stew of okra, aubergine and dried fish served with various meat accompaniments) and hearty starch side dishes like waatse (rice and beans), jollof and banku (fermented cassava served in banana leaves). The cape malay chicken stew was a gingery and flavoursome south/west African fusion dish, spoilt only by being served lukewarm. An over-seasoned guinea fowl was tempered by a tasty tomato and onion sauce. Portions are hefty. Given the popularity of its big-screen TV with football fans, the pub probably isn't the place to go for a quiet meal, but for a lively dose of Ghanaian food and hospitality, Gold Coast hits the spot.

i have been to the goldcoast bar and restaurant on various occasions for friends birthdays, anniversaries and sometimes on staurday and friday nights just to have fun. the first time a friend recommended it i was like nooooo not there, lets go to a different place but they insisted and said i would love it. and truely i did enjoy everything about the place, the services, food, customers and all. it is a very friendly and relaxing environment. it is my number one bar and restaurant now and would recommend to all

My boyfriend and I ate in The Gold Coast Bar on Saturday night and I was really looking forward to it after reading the summary on Timeout and viewing their website. Just shows you......is a great place to watch the football (the screen is huge!) but when we ventured upstairs to eat it all went sadly downhill.

My lamb kebab starter was like leather but my boyfriends spicy soup was lovely, even if a little too spicy for me. But mains were a complete disaster. My bo0yfriends lamb was so burnt you would have to take their word for it being lamb and my guinea fowl was really dry even with the tomato & onion sauce. Side dishes of yam balls and the accompniments of rice were ok.

When you're paying £50 for a meal you should at least expect it to be edible. No way I'll be returning, which in itself saddens me I so so wanted to like the place :-(
