Given the display of roast meats hanging out front, you may assume this is just another Hong Kong-style Chinatown café. The simply decorated interior, with its ground-floor and basement dining rooms, does little to dispel that notion. But examine the menu closely, and you will discover some choice Malaysian dishes dotted amid the standard Cantonese fare. Descriptions can mask the true identity of dishes; 'pork ribs soup with herbs' turned out to be bak kut teh (a soup with reputed medicinal properties that is popular at breakfast), while 'wok-fried flat wide noodles' was actually the hawker-stall favourite, char kway teow.

The flavour-dial was turned to high with our dish of okra packed with blachan. The okra was perfectly crunchy and its gooey sap kept well in check. We also wolfed down a juicy Nonya chicken curry (a red curry with chicken on the bone and potatoes), which was good enough to grace the tables of the best home cooks. A little coconut milk was used to add richness and texture, and kaffir lime leaves provided an exotic hint. This crackingly good food is served in generous portions by friendly staff, making New Fook Lam Moon one of our favourite Malaysian restaurants in London.

I have eaten there a few times this year and though small and chaotic, the service was fine. The owner is very pleasant and the food I have ordered there has been great. Yesterday we had a lunchtime set menu of Pork and vegetable soup, noodles and fruit (£5.90) as well as baked chilli salt squid (not on the menu, but is shown as prawn in shell) which is excellent. Usually the reason I go there for. Its dry, spicy and salty but sets the taste buds off (£10.00) . Complimented with a sticky style boiled rice. The portions are described as generous. We drank jasmine tea and the pot was filled up automatically as it was finished (if not, a trick here is to take the lid off and rest it back in the appature with the lid tilted if you want more). The whole bill including service was £23 for two and they were quite happy to let us sit there chatting whilst we finished our tea well after the food was finished. More than happy to go back.

I'm rather surprised by all the negativity on this page. I've been to this restaurant three times in the past year, and the experience has always been a pleasant one. It is perhaps mis-classified - they do some Malaysian dishes, but they're really more Chinese. And they are definitely at the "cheap, but very good value for money" end of the scale - always crowded, can be noisy, rather Spartan decor. Last time I was there we had a 2-person set meal, which was prawn crackers, a quarter crispy aromatic duck, two portions of rice, and three main-course dishes, all of which came to just £33 - not much more than your local Chinese take-away, but the food is FAR better quality - vegetables all perfectly cooked, and one of the nicest sweet and sour sauces I've ever tested, a world away from the usual syrupy rubbish. I've always found the servers to be polite and friendly, too, if maybe a little rushed. Not a place for a quiet, intimate dinner, but if you want good Chinese food that doesn't break the bank, I recommend it quite strongly.

the food was not all that impressive, although i will say the egg fried rice was nice, but incredibly overpriced and service was terrible, the waiter and manager both incredibly rude, and it didn't help that they automatically added the service charge. would definately not go there again.

After experiencing such BAD customer service today I felt it is necessary to write a review! First off the waiter was very ill mannered and sighed and puffed at everything we asked for as if it was a chore. A friend asked for their food to be put in a take away box and the waiter simply shoved two plastic boxes at her, to do it herself. The waiter gave us the bill before we even had our desert! Very unprofessional! It really felt like they wanted us out of there in a hurry!

We also had a slight misunderstanding in the service charge and the manager came and saw us and he gave no apologies to us what so ever and he didn't even try to be nice, even though we were being very polite. The reply was "Don't tell me how to run a restaurant" and he walked off! We tried to speak to him again and he walked off ignoring us and he simply did not care; now we had paid our bill. I will not be recommending this place to anyone and will stay far away from this restaurant as much as possible! I would rather pay more money for the food in future if I am going to be treated like a customer! So if you wish to be treated politely and with proper customer care I suggest you go elsewhere!

I've never written a review but thIs experience really was that bad. The restaurant is excessively cramped, and the food was average, if that.
The service was unbelievably poor. I have not been treated this badly in a restaurant ever and I do visit various restaurants often. The waiter was consistently rude, answering questions rudely, and making it clear that we were an Inconvenience when asking for extra drinks, etc. If the service was good enough we should never have needed to call the waiter over for extra drink in the first

I rarely write reviews but feel compelled to now. In all my years of eating out I have never been so badly treated than here and will never return. Here's why: from the moment I sat down the service was very unfriendly. I felt like an inconvenience rather than a customer. I couldn't work out why since I was smartly dressed and ordered off the menu. The waitress seldom smiled and frequently filled your tea as though to free up the table as soon as possible. Food was average and reasonably cooked. I noticed everyone else appeared to be treated the same way. About half way through the main meal, a party of about 5 turned up. I was sat alone on a table for two. Due to lack of space, I was asked to move half way through my meal to another table, despite noticing a spare table in the corner of the room which could have been moved instead. From that point I realised this could have been a take away. The staff discounted tea from the bill but had cheek to charge a service charge after all! My custom was hardly acknowledged, no apology forthcoming at the end. I have eaten out in chinese restaurants for years all over UK and in China/Hong Kong. I've never seen anything like this and will never recommend to anyone.

Went there on friday. Food is below average. it is not a Malaysian at all; i mean no Malaysian dishes were to be found in the menu (timeout sort it out please). service was well below par i have to say. the starter was burned and greasy. main course was dry, duck and fish was far too greasy, lack of vegetation choices on the menu. hugely disappointed with the food and will not be recommending this to anyone.

I went to New Fook Lam Moon with a party of nine for dinner. I thought the food was excellent, as was the service. House wine was a reasonable £11 a bottle and we ended up paying £25 a head including wine, starters and mains. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting good Chinese and Malaysian food with attentive service.
