Pearl Liang - © Britta Jaschinski
If you find yourself stuck at Paddington station with a hunger for the Orient, head west to this modern hideaway shielded by tall glass buildings. A giant abacus and small goldfish pond greet you at reception, then you enter a stylish room decked out in glossy pink, with wooden lattice screens and modish low chairs clad in mauve.
The place was already heaving when we arrived, and we found ourselves having to eat in the bar. Pearl Liang's menu is rooted in Cantonese cookery, although chicken satay and Thai green curry make an appearance.
Dim sum (served daytime only) is a strong suit. The meal started with silky dumplings filled with crabmeat and topped with egg white and salmon roe. We also sampled a supple fried octopus cake with chives that had us fighting over the last piece.
The kitchen can falter, however; consommé served with sheets of beancurd and bamboo pith had little flavour, and prawn won tun in a spicy broth was marred by too much vinegar.
Aloof service can let the side down too, but keen prices and the chic interior made us forget the few shortcomings.

I enjoyed the casual dining and wining experience in the cocktail bar section but perhaps I will only visit Pearl Liang again as 'a bar with small eats' kind of place. We ordered 4 dishes and their quality were not even, only salt and pepper squid was tasty and I will happily have it again, steam bums were okay, fried veg dumplings were poor and chicken satay was extremely bad, they looked like they were pre-prepared long time ago and just reheated in the microwave, very dry and sad, £6 for that was way too expensive. With quality so uneven, I will not consider to eat a meal there.
I love this restaurant!..The setting is filled with opulence and sophistication with food to match, I salivated over the dim sum and wiped my plate clean,( but messed up the tablecloth) when I tucked into their gorgeous garlic and ginger lobster with noodles!. Loved their prawn ravioli and chilli garlic soup and their egg custard tarts just melted in my mouth!.staff couldnt be more attentive. This is must-try!
Nice food, dreadful service - very slow, deeply uninterested and they forgot a main meal. Staff ignored us despite repeated attempts to get their attention. The only time anyone seemed to care how we felt was at the end, when we omitted the service charge from the bill and the manager claimed we hadn't alerted them to the problems. Never going back there.
Xmas is a great and rare time I am able to meet with friends and family. A dear friend of ours, Raymond (The Legend) organised this years' dinner.. and despite all the threats of 'kebab nite' we were all pleasantly surprised when we were taken to this hidden, new development which was home to Pearl Liang. Oh my gosh, we were absolutely blown away. this boutique style restaurant was chic and modern yet somehow still managed to capture that homegrown/backhome feeling. As Loraine rightly put it 'the first starter set the tone for the entire evening' and it did! the dishes were beautifully presented, tasting crisp and fresh every time.. again just blown away. Planning another night out and Pearl Liang is top on the list. Faultless..
I have been there for both dinner and lunch, and would score Pearl Liang highly on food, decor and service. Head and shoulders above the competition and good value in my opinion. It is busy even though it is in a strange location which says a lot.
After reading several reviews about this restaurant, we went today for what we thought would be a lovely meal.
The restaurant looks lovely and the prices match the pretentious surrounding but both the food and service came way too short of expectations.
The staff just do not understand what Friendly service. Maybe cause their English isnt brilliant. Sorry but its England and in a posh restaurant. its expected right?
THe food was very salty and Oily to an extent that you need to constantly wipe your fingers dry.
I did manage to flag it up to the manager after starters and hoped the mains would be better but it was stil terrible food.
The manager never came back ONCE to check on us despite me telling him about the poor starters.
The food was very average and over rated.
On leaving. I made it a point to tell the manager that it was terrible food. He seemed rather defensive leave alone an apology.
we paid are FULL bill and left and now i am feeling sick. I hope I dont have to call in sick for food poisoning. what a rip off for AWFUL food and service!
