The name is Antipodean, as are the cheery, slightly dishevelled staff at this hip little coffee bar by Berwick Street Market. Clued-up Soho folk drop by for their caffeine dose, perhaps also ordering from the all-day breakfast list (croissants, porridge, own-made baked beans with goat's cheese on ciabatta). They cram into the narrow dark interior, sitting at scarred wooden tables and listening to a soundtrack of indie tunes.

Lunches include salads and toasted sandwiches: soba salad was a colourful assembly of well-dressed noodles and crunchy veg; chorizo sandwich had a generous helping of spicy fried sausage and roast pepper wrapped in toasted flatbread. Specials tend to run out by mid-afternoon.

The main event, our flat white, was an expertly tuned balance of the bitter and the creamy (the creaminess created by microscopic bubbles in the milk) - but arrived lukewarm. There's also a choice of a dozen other coffee styles, plus juices, shakes and gooey cakes. In all, a decent pit-stop: Australian, yes, but oh so Soho.

Friendly and fun. This remains London's best coffee shop for all round quality and surroundings. The owners really know how to create amazing coffee and unlike other coffee shops they do it with energy and fun rather than snootiness and arrogance.

Still churning out consistently one of the best drops in London. Take it for what it is, a coffee bar with snacks and you will be impressed. One of the true originals in Londons new wave of coffee houses.

If you want your coffee scalded and foamy, try Starbucks. Flat White serves it at the right temperature.
