Terroirs was among the first places in London to serve 'natural wines': unfiltered wines with no added acid, sugar or sulphur, made from biodynamically grown organic grapes (here marked by a horse icon).
All the wines on the 200-strong list come from artisan growers, mostly from France or Italy, who work sustainably, organically or biodynamically, with minimal interventions at the winery.
There's a good choice by the glass and pot, but it's a shame to miss the tasting notes on the main list. A 2008 Domaine Sébastien Riffault Sancerre is described as 'a thunderous gallop through wild forests and murky thickets'.
However, what makes everyone so keen on Terroirs is that the food is just as good. Served in the small ground floor, and an attractive, roomy basement, the menu runs from charcuterie and cheese, through small plates (salade paysanne, fish soup, smoked duck with beetroot and hazelnuts) to bigger plats du jour, such as braised rabbit leg with glazed carrots, celeriac purée and tarragon.
Service is brisk but friendly; we were in a hurry and the waiter made sure we hit our deadline. Terroirs is often fully booked, but always has non-reservable seats at the bar.

Babies and children admitted, Booking advisableJust been for the first time. What a great place. I was on crutches and they were very accomodating, the wine selection was good value and extensive and the menu just perfect winter food. Loved it.
Usually a favorite but they occasionally miss the mark. Last night the menu was so "nose to tail" that the squeamish eaters in my party (and the kids) couldn't find an option. Also they've gotten ever stingier about the bread portioning, which is ridiculous since a lot of the small plates are charcuterie and cheese, and bread is an essential complement.
Agree with Time Out, disagree with some of the negative comments. There's lots of choice of the menu whether you are grazing or prefer something more substantial, the vibe is great and the wine list is absolutely fantastic. As for the "pretentious" service, the staff have always been efficient and utterly polite. Terroirs has set the standard for London wine bars.
Absolutely love this place. I don't know how it can be described as pretentious or overpriced, the prices are very reasonable and it is not snooty at all. My only disappointment is that it took us so long to get there after it opened and I missed out on the food all that time.
We've been here a few times now in the past couple months. The charcuterie board is to die for. The rest of the food we've tried there has been fantastic. The staff are friendly and charming, and seem to really care about the place. They really know their stuff and are happy to talk through the wine and let you have a taste of different ones. The best seat in the house is the bar upstairs, you get to have a chat with the chefs and check out the action.
The only problem with it is that it's so busy you have to book for a table, but if you're happy to wait with a glass of wine you can always get a seat at the bar.
My idea of bliss is a seat at the bar of Terroirs, the charcuterie board and a glass of wine. Fantastic. I recommend it highly.
Im from South Africa and accordingly not used to french cuisine, but i did not enjoy the food, the options on the menu were also very limited and they ran out of two of the very few options by the time we arrived. The wine is excellent though
One of the most pretentious and overpriced places in London, combined with absolutely shocking customer service.
Evidently, a couple of service blips as detailed elsewhere but I am a regular at Terroirs and can report that it is consistently good. I love the food - more tapas-y upstairs, heartier in the basement restaurant, the service is always welcoming and the buzz is great. A brilliant wine list with great choice by the glass is a real bonus. Terroirs is the perfect venue for a swift snack or an old-fashioned blow-out. 5 stars indeed.
I cannot believe this restaurant received a 5 star review. I booked a table for 3 for lunch 40 mins after ordering our food there was still no sign of it.
It is overpriced, pretenious and pathetic service. I will never go there again and I will certainly never recommend it to anyone unless they like to burn money for no reason.
Stunning atmospheric wine bar and restaurant. I've been here about a dozen times, both upstairs and down and never been disappointed. Last time was wowed by leg of rabbit braised with baby broad beans, peas and shallots and tarragon - deep, gamey flavours. A special starter of razor clams with lemon, garlic and parsley was simple but delicious and the prawn with romesco sauce are always very well done. The wine list is sensational; great value, full of extraordinary gems and lesser seen grapes and regions. These wines really do with the food and are a refreshing change from the pumped up, pretentious wines you see on so many wine lists. Finally, a word for the service; I always found it accommodating and smiley. Oh - and the atmosphere upstairs rocks!
This was my second visit to Terroirs and it will be my last.
My first visit a few weeks ago was an excellent experience with fabulous Chicken Landaise and great service.
My second visit tonight was not a success.
Two friends and I opted for an early dinner. We arrived at 5:30pm with the hope of enjoying a meal before the Opera at the ENO across the road from Terroirs.
When asking for a menu the waitress informed us that it was not yet printed and will be ready in a few minutes. Fine we thought.
20 minutes later we remained sans menu and strangely sans waitress.
When we finally managed to track down our waitress we explained that the anticipation of awaiting for the freshly printed menus was proving too much to endure and asked if there was any possibility of someone pressing 'send to print' before curtain up.
At this point we were immediately offered a menu which had clearly been available all day; in fact it was the exact same menu as detailed on the Terroirs website.
Why we could not have been offered this menu upon arrival is beyond comprehension.
Clearly Terroirs has a lack of care toward customers.
This place is simply fanatsic! The food is excellent. I went with my girlfriend (who is from thre South of France) and she was impressed. All the food was good, but the highlight was the Bavette. They sell a great selection of wines and the atmosphere is nice too. This place warrants its 5/5 rating!
