Sedap's modest frontage conceals a smoothly run, darkly handsome little restaurant, with gold dragon decorations on the walls, exotic tea sets in cabinets, and goldfish in an aquarium on the black counter. The place seemed overstaffed early on a Sunday evening, but the two smart waiters were soon at full stretch, with a packed room and takeaway orders coming in.
If you love the nutty flavour of satay sauce, try the achar, a zingy Nonya dish of pickled carrots, cauliflower and cucumber with peanuts and sesame, offered as a starter. Many of the main courses glisten with colour. By comparison, beef rendang looked undistinguished, despite its careful mound of rice, yet it proved to be a delicious version of the 'dry' curry - spiced to prickle the brow and sucking at the tongue. Penang char kway teow (a stir-fry of prawns, chinese sausage, slivers of fish cake, spring onions, egg, beansprouts and soy) suffered only from the slightly soggy noodles.
With LSO St Luke's opposite and the Barbican a short walk south, Sedap draws a curious but enthusiastic clientele: a mix of stripy-blazered City boys and their female companions, self-appointed Shoreditch culturati and Asian women.

We were just about to go to the Thai place a few doors up when we saw the owners waving to us from up the road as they were were 15 minutes late to open up.
I too ordered the char kway teow and like Annie's comment, the portion was half the size of that of what you would received in Malaysia Kopi Tiam or C & R and also more expensive.
I wouldn't have minded so much if it tasted fantastic but the noodles didn't have the required smoky taste and the prawns were utterly tasteless.
I was so hungry when I got home that I had to make another meal.
I would not recommend this place at all and would say that C & R and Malaysia Kopi Tiam are far and away miles better.
I went there with my friend for lunch. I ordered Char kway teow from the full price manual. 10 mins later the waiter brought me a half loaded portion of noodle which looked like a side dish, very disappointed. Although it tasted very delicious, for this price range, I probably won’t go back for lunch.
