This huge 19th-century pub beside Victoria Park has a large garden (complete with busy 'garden grill' in summer), a main bar decorated with Victoriana and Eagle-style comic annuals that serves creditable pub fare and, tucked away at the side, a full-blown dining room furnished with retro British Ercol Windsor tables and chairs. This Britishness is celebrated on the menu too, though we were grateful for the inclusion of continental touches such as a pretty bowl of gnocchi topped with crayfish tails, peas and a well-judged saffon sauce. New-season lamb rump was perfectly pink and tender and served with a piquant salsa verde and caper dressing. Fat mackerel fillets came draped over roasted potatoes, a warm fennel salad cutting through the oiliness of the fish. Puddings included elderflower jelly with mixed berries, and treacle tart with apple sorbet. Slow service - a result of understaffing on this occasion - let the generally good standard of cooking down, but the drinks list is enlightened, with good beers (Meantime and various guest ales) and interesting, affordable wines by the glass.

Facilities
Tables outdoors ( 17, garden ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs; nappy-changing facilities ), Booking advisable, Separate room for parties ( seats 30 ), Disabled ( toilet )very poor. the place was empty, yet food took an hour to arrive. Burger was dry, bun was stale, and the chips were rock hard. wont be returning
OK not the best Sunday roast in the world but great to have a place where I can take dog and kids after walk in the park and dont get the skunk eye from the staff.
Good local ales - kept pretty well too
Its a lovely pub, and I always enjoy a drink there. But I've tried to eat there three times, each worse than the previous one. The last time I was there the food was so poor the manager just handed back our money and apologised. A shame.
Staff are incredibly rude and slow. It took 2 hours for us to order and be served our food. They really need to work On their service and manage peoples expectations. Saying all that the food was pretty good and the setting is lovely. Just a shame it is so badly run.
the pub is great looking - but staff are terribly rude and slow. Much better pubs in the area with more professional staff. Good not great either - cold and bland
I agree - How wrong is the rating on this one! The food was sub standard and bland. The staff were nice but service was slow - it's probably best to just stick to drinks here!
I completely agree with Daz - standards of both food and service seem to have gone downhill in the last few months, despite a lovely setting.
Pub looks great with good beer garden but service is woeful and attitude of the management is terrible - much better at the Royal Inn or the Empress. Really worth avoiding.
