It doesn't take long to spot the star attraction at Tosa - there's a robata grill by the entrance. If you want to watch the chef at work and don't mind the smoke, sit at the counter or at one of the small tables next to the window. Alternatively, head into the dining room, whose white walls are lined with decorative kimono belts and Japanese prints.
Sticky glazed yakitori, crispy-skinned tebasaki (chicken wings) and bacon-rolled asparagus have proved to be popular skewers, but there are more adventurous options too, favoured by the Japanese diners (ox tongue, chicken skin and quail's eggs, for example).
Grilled black bream head was bursting with flavour, and yellowtail nigiri was well prepared. However, Tosa salad (a pretty average mixed salad with radish dressing) seemed overpriced at £5.20.
For dessert, look to the specials tacked up on the wall. To drink, saké is served in traditional square wooden cups (masu); there's beer and shochu too. We found service attentive at the beginning of our meal, but it waned towards the end.

Babies and children admitted, Booking advisable, Takeaway serviceHaving recently returned to the UK from Japan, i read the reviews and decided to take my girlfriend to Tosa. We turned up around 7:00 and we didn't realise we had to make a reservation, but the waitress gave us a table provided we finish by 8pm. Strangely none of the waitress could not speak Japanese. We were left ignored for a good 10mins after the waitress sat us down and left us with the menu. When the food came round, instead of placing the plates on the table, they were almost thrown in front of us. Like the reviewer below our plates were also taken away before we could finish chewing. The food was ok, not as good as the other places I've been to. What upset me the most, was when I saw one of waitress putting her finger in the food when she was asking her colleague what the name of the dish was called. I noticed there were some Japanese visitors at other tables and they didn't seem to be impressed with the service either. We didn't even bother with dessert and asked for the bill immediately. We won't be returning there again, it's a shame..
Having read several good reviews, my boyfriend and I thought we would give Tosa a go for a Friday night out as we love Japanese food.
Woeful mistake - we were stuck in a table by the loo at the back in a corner and roundly ignored by all of the waiting staff. Our food came in drips and drabs, my sushi came a good 30 minutes before my boyfriend's skewers, with his rice a further 10 minutes behind. Our final dish of Karage arrived another 15 minutes after that. When we raised the issue, our waitress was apologetic but didn't offer money off the bill or any other compensation.
Instead, after we'd finished eating (our plates were taken before we'd even finished chewing our final mouthfuls) she bought us a bowl of stewed pork belly and another rice. Considering that we'd ordered chicken dishes and sushi, this didn't correlate at all with our previous food. I'd much rather have been offered a dessert or drinks, as is common courtesy in most restaurants.
When we tried to ask for the bill, we were roundly ignored for another 20 minutes before we finally had to get up and go to pay at the bar.
Needless to say, we won't be returning.
