Much of the business is in takeaways for nearby office workers, but katsu specialist Tsuru has smart tall wooden stools with matching benches for
those who want to eat-in. Cold items (japanese potato salad, spinach with oritashi sauce) are chosen from the chill cabinet that holds sushi boxes to-go, and orders for hot food (curry, teriyaki bento) are taken at the bar, so you can wind up eating half your meal from plastic containers and half from pottery plates. In the evenings you might find a saké tasting or new-music showcase.

Tables outdoors ( 5, pavement ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Available for hire, Disabled ( toilet ), Takeaway serviceI went for a Katsu curry on Monday lunchtime as I do most weeks - I work round the corner and find it to be a consistently first rate, seriously tasty pick-me-up for a crap day at work. I can't fault a single thing I've tried from the evening menu either (fab place for a beer) but the chicken kara-age and the octopus balls are simply stunning. I don't think it's over-priced because it's all ethically-sourced, handmade and as fresh as fresh can be so I really don't know what the other reviewers below are on about. Perhaps they're Tsuru's worried competition?
Tsuru's katsu curry is great! I say that based on about 6 visits over 2 years. Their sushi I've always found ok rather than great, but a katsu with a side dish of spinach goma ai has (in my experience at least) always been good.
a MASSIVE rip off!!
Chicken katsu curry £6.40! And it was very mediocre, too much rice, not enough sauce, no garnish and generally lacking flavour.
City Kitchen's microwave version from Tesco is better that this.
I find Tsuru's sushi boxes a little bit too small for a satisfying meal and quite expensive too, and I concur with the previous reviewer in that the boxes look sad and inadequate. I'm comparing it to Itsu which I really love and its really no match! They also charge 50p for an additional satchet of soya soyce.
Seriously? Tsuru has a TimeOut approval rating? I'm from a place where very good value for $$ sushi is available easily (so am a bit spoiled) and often think that Londoners, while having lots of choice across cuisines are generally deprived of authenticity and quality.
I had been craving sushi, but Tsuru's sushi boxes looked so sad that I opted for chicken katsu. Upon immediately biting into a piece of gristle I regretted not having my work canteen's curry day. Even the miso soup was bland for miso soup!
Anyhow, I'm full now, but still craving good sushi...
