Café: Portuguese

A riotous splash of colour at the grey Streatham end of Brixton Hill, this Portuguese café is already packed most lunchtimes with locals overlooking its dodgy spelling in favour of superb coffees, stellar pastries and a bustling family atmosphere.

The latter is thanks to Paulo himself, the larger-than-life owner whose prints are on everything from the Freecycled fishtank ('bloody frog costs me £10 a week in fish food'), to the replica Vasco De Gama bridge ('took me almost as long to make as the real one').

It's Paulo'z wife's cooking we sampled in the diminutive downstairs restaurant, its living room atmosphere so complete that requests for extra plates were met with a rummage around the cabinets lining one wall, and music came from a DVD of fado singer Mariza playing on a flatscreen television.

We started with own-made soft cheese dashed with oregano and olive oil, marinated olives from Paulo's family estate in Alentejo (also the source of our plucky red wine), and a platter of king prawns baked in a bombastic chilli and garlic broth.

Mains were equally upbeat, from salt cod bacalhau in a peppery tomato sauce with (slightly undercooked) chipped potatoes, to a tender picanha rump steak served with chips, black beans and fried plantain.

All of which left little room for dessert, although Paulo wouldn't let us leave without sampling a bowl of his wife's rich chocolate mousse drizzled with brandy.

We left sated, a touch unsteady and feeling like one of the family.

Paulo Way cooked for our Fun day in 2010, the food was excellent the delivery on time and offered use lovely free meals to sample the food. I enjoyed the lovely authentic Portuguese dishes, made with love and care and attention to details. My favourite the “Bacallhau com natas“, it tasted amazing and the cheese wooosing and stretchy just deliousss, it remind me of my favourite restaurant in Oeiras where my family lives. The atmosphere me casa to casa my home is your home, Paul and the waiters made use fells very especial… with had our team lunch for Christmas and order food one ever possible. To the team and Paulo’s Way keep up the good Work.

Especial thank for the especial price for the food at the Fun day, (on behalf of the residents)
The Afro-Portuguese Portuguese Brazilian Latin-American community in Stockwell Park thank you.

I just took my good friend there on his arrival back home. I picked the place as it's near my flat and I wanted to try their food for looong time. The nicest treat was... bread with tuna pate on arrival. We had 4 big tapas and each of them (chorizo in white wine, calamares, 'grilled' 'squid and mushrooms in cheese) was just awful... underseasoned, bland and a texture of over-cooked potatoes... OK, it was cheap (£22 with a beer on the top of our food). Never take a friend for a treat to a place that is unknown to you, as you may be VERY dissapointed. I am.

This is a great place to have lunch or dinner with children as the fish tanks and all the various decorations will keep them amused/entertained. Superb made to order birthday cakes, great food & very friendly staff. Decent prices for London. I went back twice with 8 guests each time and we had a fab lunch there . I strongly recommend that you try it !

Went there for dinner. Food average! Surprised when they charged me £1.2 per head for 1 small basket of bread and olives when I did not ask for it. 3 of my guests weren't even there when the basket came but it was still charged. Not worth it!
Not to talk about the Deco! I suppose the theory is the more the better, but it is just toooooooo much !
