'Room' pretty much says it all. This shoebox of a coffee bar opposite Great Ormond Street Hospital (and its handy cashpoint, because, note, they don't take cards) is barely big enough to swing a teabag let alone a cat, yet when we surveyed the spate of new coffee bars for the 2010 Time Out Eating & Drinking Awards, this spot was the hands-down winner.
Since then, London has become even more heavily endowed with potential caffeine fixes and, short of roasting its own beans, we reckon Espresso Room still beats most of them. And who could be more deserving of great coffee than the staff of the hospital opposite? They come in a steady stream for drinks made from Has Bean and Square Mile beans, plus 'builder's', 'posh' or herbal teas.
The range of food isn't huge, but it's top-quality, with a daily soup (pea, spinach and coriander, on our visit), sandwiches (lovely smoked chicken and artichoke hearts on sourdough, or cheese and pickle) and well-made cakes (the choc chip and walnut blondie would convert doubters).
Pleasant, intelligent staff offer a glass of water with the brews and are happy to grind bags of beans for customers to take home.

Tables outdoors ( 6, pavement ), Babies and children admitted, Takeaway serviceWe went out of our way to try this place due to all the positive feedback. Perhaps they specialize in lattes of flat whites, in any case, my wife and I ordered two mochas. Both were extremely milky, barely luke-warm, weak in coffee and a faint taste of Choc syrup. We were quite disappointed especially at the price of 3 pounds. Unfortunately we were in a hurry so couldn't give feedback at the time, but if your a mocha lover beware!
This place is absolutely fantastic, I have been to a huge selection of coffee shops around London and this rates at the top. A very smooth Latte indeed. Excellent, would highly recommend it to any coffee lover. (stay away from the chains ppl)
A gem of a place. Friendly service and expertly crafted java.
I've been going here for over a year. Excellent drinks and great staff. @Sarah McIlwaine - shame you didn't enjoy your drink - did you say anything at the time? I've only had a bad drink once and they were really keen to put it right.
I've been using this place twice a week for about the last six months. The coffee has been consistently good and the best I have tasted in London.
They deserve all the praise they have been getting. I guess the other reviewer likes to go against the crowd.
I went to Espresso room with high hopes, it being recommended on Twitter! Quite disappoited, a far too milky flat white! Everyone seems to love it, but I'm sticking to my absolute favourite, Flat White in Berwick St Soho!
