Palmers is by far the most welcoming spot on an unlovely stretch of Roman Road, with cooking that exceeds the norm for London restaurants, never mind this part of town. Run by a Czech family, with a talented son in the kitchen, the white-painted, modern-looking restaurant is minimally decorated but comfortable.
Prices are very reasonable, particularly as portions are sizeable: a beautifully seared rump steak, with giant chips, roast tomato, leaf salad and fresh-tasting chimichurri sauce cost just £13.50. Other mains were similarly appealing: spiced lamb with tabouleh and pomegranate salad was done just-so, with three big pieces of tender meat, while equally tender, tasty duck came with gloriously punchy merguez sausage, rosemary potatoes and spinach.
Every plate was wiped clean - and this after starters of a meat plate (three meats, toasted sourdough, caperberries and cornichons), and a refreshing salad of smoked mackerel with beetroot, soft-boiled egg and little gem lettuce. Best of all was a huge bowl of spicy bouillabaisse.
The only misstep was a rubbery buttermilk panna cotta; other desserts of sorbet, and affogato (with both chocolate and vanilla ice-cream) went down a treat. The wine list lags behind the menu in scope and quality, but overall this is a lovely local that's also worth a trip.

Babies and children admitted, Booking advisable ( weekends ), Available for hire, Disabled ( toilet ), Takeaway serviceStubbled upon this for a Sunday lunch. What a pleasure. Friendly service ( all family members I expect) very reasonable and excellent food. Instantly marked as one to come back to. Liked the short menu and wine list. Suggests a good business confident in what they offer .
I have had some of the best meals I have ever tasted here, they never let me down. The food is delicious, i even sometimes look at the photo of the meal i took at our Xmas dinner at Palmers and salivate, it was so gorgeous! The price is good, the staff are lovely and the food brilliant.
Amazing and adorable. Restaurant of the modern Frenchy-British ilk run by a friendly Czech family - Pops and three talented sons.
It has a small, balanced menu and the cooking is great - starter portion of bouillabaisse was packed with fresh seafood and fish, accompanied by a zesty, spiced rouille and parmesan toasts (disproving the fish and cheese rule!). Delicious. Favourite dish was a whole roast baby chicken with wild mushrooms and chive gnocchi, which was just awesome. AWESOME. Crispy skin, rich sauce, floaty-light gnocchi...the works. So good.
The decor is a bit naff but that's quite charming in its own way, and as dfoz says below, the restaurant has its priorities in the right order. The service - mainly pops and his youngest son - was well paced and the kid is very sweet…a bit bashful and shy but knows what he’s talking about, and talks proudly about his brothers in the kitchen if you ask. Utterly charming.
Dropped in the West End you'd probably pay twice as much - definitely worth the trip out east.
Go!
Made our third visit to Palmers this weekend. We like it more each time we go. The Sunday roast is excellent and better value than any of the pubs on the other side of the park, in Hackney village. I'm working my way through the starters and can recommend the bouillabaisse and the beef and papaya. They had monkfish cheeks on the menu at one point too which was great. Perhaps they could make the dining room a little bit more intimate in some way. That said, the service and open kitchen hatch make the place feel friendly and welcoming. There are enough places where decor comes at the expense of the food. Palmers thankfully has it's priorities in the right places.
I cant recommend this place highly enough. Fantastic food, some dishes with an unusual edge to them and all well executed. Service was friendly and attentive but not fussy - a good complement to the really great food. Prices are reasonable. This place is by far the best in the area. I'm looking forward to going back soon.
We eat here regularly and feel that the quality of both the food and the cooking is excellent. Whilst the menu is deliberatey kept small as all the ingredients are sourced locally and are therefore fresh when cooked there is never any difficulty in choosing what to have - in fact the difficulty is in choosing which items on offer to eat on any particular visit. There are a number of up and coming restaurants in the area but for the moment Palmers leads the field.
Palmer's is my gourmet dining room. I was delighted when it opened on the Roman road at Twig Folly bridge. I have tried everything their superb and artistic chef has to offer. The starters set you up well for their highest quality mouth-watering steak or seafood. The vegetarian option is just as tasty and I must have the desert even though I don't have a sweet tooth. I used to travel around London to find good food until Palmer's opened. Did I mention the wine? Be careful of the Fleur de Lis, a delicious and very smooth fruity red - one glass is never enough!!
The food here was delicious i had duck ravioli for starter and could of easily had a bigger portion as a main.. then i had the rabbit which was delicious.. the cheesecake was to die for as well. The service was nice and not rushed... so we didnt feel under pressure to leave. We went on a Monday night so there was no seabass unfortunately but still the steak my boyfriend had was cooked to perfection and the chips were chunky and very filling.
I definately want to go back here in fact every week would be nice if i could afford it. Although not that pricey for the size of the portions.
Be prepared to be stuffed and very drunk if on the red wine :)
Really pleased with this one. Nice place and great food along modern british/euro lines.
There’s a limited menu so an outside chance it'll get cooked well and it was. I had an excellent bouillabaise followed by rabbit on red cabbage and celeriac..
My partner had duck ravioli then sea bass fillets with squid.
Finished it off with a prune and almond tart with rum and raisin ice cream and an excellent cheescake.
The service was polite and very welcoming.
Only wierdness was a light that comes on at the serving hatch when service is called. A bit odd that one and vaguely irksome.
Also the limited wine list escalates steeply in price. (Hello! We're in a recession people!) The glass of french red I had was very smooth and pleasant though and went well with my food.
We enjoyed a relaxed Saturday out there and will happily go again
ace. Service is prompt (without being pushy) and the food was easily the best we've had in e2 so far. Beef wellington went down a treat alongside the sizeable glasses of house red, and the experience was capped off with lush chocolate pudding and a friendly natter with the owner Stan - clearly a good guy who understands clearly what a good restaurant is. Looking forward to seeing how Palmers evolves in the future.
The food is as good as you'll eat anywhere. Go there for food with passion and genuinely friendly service.
The steak. Oh my.
Please try the steak.
I highly recommend this place & added bonus is they serve draught Czech pilsner. The pin in the map above isn't in the right place though - it's further east, closer to where Roman Road crosses the canal.
Gosh, we've been told they served nice food ! Well they serve really nice food ! The service was warm and welcoming and genuine and it clear that we'll come back very soon. They could definitely charge more and we'll still come back (but don't tell them !).
This place is just brilliant. A small family-run restaurant which takes real pride in what it does. The food really is high level for such reasonable places.
I went for a relaxed dinner with my girlfriend and we had a lovely time. The owner is really enthusiastic and clearly proud of the food and wine he serves – we were made to feel very welcome. His pride is justified by the clean modern and, most importantly, delicious food served. I had razor clam with chorizo and broad beans to start which looked gorgeous and was excellently flavoured (a gentle white wine broth lifting the dish). Main was a pork cutlet with prune chutney, potato gratin and fennel – I don’t think it sounds that great but it was really delicious – the pork was tender and sweet. Wine was reasonably priced and very nice. We will go again and I will look forward to it.
Had dinner there yesterday with friends. Great food, friendly staff, pleasant music - we stayed for hours.. had 3 courses and 4 bottles of wine!! We'll be back for sure.
Absolutely delicious! The dishes were seasonal and beautifully cooked. The staff were friendly, but not overbearing. It was good value for the high quality of food we had. We will definitely be returning.

Had dinner there last Friday. Don't be put off by the uninspiring decor. The food is amazing - worth making the trek for. Ingredients were fresh and dishes were well-thought out. The friendly owner and staff make you feel very welcome. Would go again.
We went here for dinner yesterday and loved it. Like the Time Out review says, the decor isn't particulaly inspiring... but the food definitely is. We all really enjoyed our tasty and well priced food and wine. The owner was so friendly and warm. Please go and eat here - it's definitely worth supporting this local gem.
Had a fantastic meal, great food and great service. Very entertaining
waiter bringing out high class food at a snip. Would recommend you visit!
went there yesterday night, the place was full with locals; service was very nice and efficient, food was very good, well served and well cooked! will go back, even though we don't live locally but a refreshing alternative to the (too?) hip scene of shoreditch!
the food was ok, not 4 star rating at all. lots of raw celery for some odd reason. we had one good main, and the rest was below acceptable.
Visited the place with a group of friends and will certainly go back there. The food was delicious!
