Has the burrito bar trend peaked with the arrival of the huge and much-hyped Chipotle chain from the US? Judging by the queues out into the street during Chipotle's first week - up to half an hour just to reach the counter - Londoners still can't get enough of them.
The appeal of the burrito is obvious: lots of squidgy stuff in your hands, bold flavours, instant gratification once you get stuck in.
Chipotle claims to be a cut above the existing London burrito bars, and it certainly charges premium prices for its wraps filled with 'food with integrity', but it's still a fast food joint, not a place for lingering.
The most popular dish is the chicken burrito at £6.60, made with grilled 'higher welfare' chicken that's been marinated in chipotle adobo (a paste made from chipotle chilli).
Other fillings include braised beef, grilled steak, pork and a vegetarian black bean option. There are also tacos and salads, but these are for wimps. And is it just us, or is the 'medium hot' salsa actually pretty tame?
Decent burritos, then, but not sensational enough to light our fire.

Meal for two with drinks and service: around £18
I had a burrito and I found it to be very stodgy! I would probably try the lighter options next time! On the other hand, this restaurant had a few good points! Everything is fresh and made on site.. I even witnessed one of the staff mashing some avocados! In comparison to tortilla at canary wharf it is 100 times better!!
The best burrito restaurant in the capital. no doubt. get the steak - delicious meaty chunks - and the sweetcorn relish, which is a Chipotle special. Slightly more price than other burrito houses, however it's by the freshest, tastiest and has the best quality meat. Trust - the legwork has been done.
Love it! It's the perfect quick and healthy lunch (less the sour cream). The que out the door looks long but you'll be in and out the door in a jiffy and trust me it's worth the wait! The food is fresh and tasty, and the prices are reasonable.
Nice fast food. The chicken was the only meat non salty that night. Guacamole as an extra £1.40 is a steal. Nice atmosphere and very nice staff.
I have been there twice the barbacoa burrito excellent, price good, of course i will be back and you can see the green tomatillos NOT CANNED!
Coming to London for a visit in August and certainly did not expect to find a Chipolte. We're from CA and there is a Chipolte on every corner. Our favorite burrito is the carnitas, which is a great shredded pork variety. Probably won't be visiting the London Chipolte though, since something different would be nice!
Had a Chicken Burrito here at the weekend - my husband took me as it's not the sort of place i would normally go for. Was very good actually, and wasn't greasy or fatty like some Mexican food I've had. He wants to take me again seeing as i liked it and I guess I won't grumble as much next time!
£6.60 for a Chipotle burrito? I'm pretty sure its about the same in dollars in the US. I'm a big fan of Chipotle and eat it all the time when I'm in the states, but this is just gouging. Daddy Donkey in Leather Lane and Burrito Bros on Clerkenwell Rd do a great burrito for a pound or more less.
