If you are looking for the unconnected restaurant run by Australian chef Bill Granger, called Granger & Co, click here; Bill's (London) is not connected to bills (Sydney).

The original branch of Bill's opened in Lewes, East Sussex in 2001 with a simple plan to combine an old-fashioned grocer (baskets of local fruit and veg) with a mid-market deli (displays of own-label jam, olive oil and Continental treats) and an informal café serving an unpretentious British/Med menu.

As is often the case, simple things can be the hardest, but judging by the mini-chain's success (there's a phenomenally busy branch in Brighton and another in Reading), Bill's is getting it right.

This is Bill Collison's first foray into London, helped along by investment from restaurateur Richard Caring (who owns The Ivy, among many others). It could hardly be more central: it's settled in a plum spot in the new St Martin's Courtyard development, a bit of a haven in an area sensible Londoners usually avoid.

Apart from a lone box of complimentary clementines outside the door, fresh produce is notably absent in this branch - although to be fair, it's been many years since Covent Garden rents encouraged greengrocery as a vocation.

Instead of boxes of dirty tubers there are tables over two floors; bunches of chillies dangle down and deli shelves stretch to the ceiling. Wooden tables look pre-loved and there are recipes writ large on the walls. Staff are pally and very efficient; the extensive all-day menus they bring read so well that selection is a test.

We went for a beetroot salad (both golden and fuchsia, with lentils and parsley), a chorizo brioche sandwich with houmous, yogurt and some brilliant skin-on chips. A straightforward dish of grilled chicken with lemon, rosemary and garlic was also perfectly thought-out and made with good ingredients.

Other options include couscous and feta salad, fishcakes with tartare slaw or a fish finger sandwich. There's also breakfast, served until noon - which a bit of a local institution in the Brighton outpost.

There aren't many places in Covent Garden that suit so many purposes so well - an early breakfast, a quick lunch, an afternoon coffee or a more substantial dinner (Bill's serves booze too). A very welcome and welcoming addition to the area.

Tragic service at islington restaurent. We were made to feel like imposters. Food was less than lukewarm. Massively overrated.

As near-consistently mentioned here, the service was pretty appalling. We had to wait for perhaps 30 minutes for a table with at least three sitting clearly empty. The managing staff seemed tad glazed over and certainly like they couldn't cope with a full restaurant, and seemed to be wandering aimlessly about whilst the queue got progressively bigger. when eventually seated the service was quick enough, but most staff seemed to be chatting amongst themselves and little else. the brighton branch was incredibly efficiently run in comparison, and was certainly no quieter the last time i visited. saying this, the food was good (though the bread was a little stale and meanly portioned) and it is very reasonable for central london. just need to train their staff properly.

Went with 3 friends, service really poor, first guy wanted to sit us on a large comunal table, as the restaurant was quite empty we asked if he could push two tables of two together instead so we could have some privacy. This was done begrudgingly, miserably and slowly. Our waitress took our order whilst leaning with her elbows on the table, abruptly leaving when two of us hadn't ordered yet. Her english very poor so we struggled to understand her. Asked for the bill and waited 20 minutes before we managed to catch her eye whilst she was chatting at the till and she saw us and suddenly remembered us. Overall the experience was a bit ludicrous, whilst on one hand 2-3 staff, jazz handed and sing-songed, the minute we sat down to take drinks, then food, when we hadnt even looked at the menu to a waitress who didn't wait for us all to order and then left us for 20 mins to get our bill.

This was the covent garden one, wouldn't go again

Went for brunch today. Food lovely, fresh and excellent quality. Service mediocre with a smile from the waitresses but the female and male managers were friendly and helpful. I will definitely go again.

This place is amazing! Went there for the first time with a bunch of work mates for breakfast and absolutely adored it. The service was excellent and food was divine. Go early (we got there at about 10:15) as by 11am the queue was out of the door, however, at no time did we feel under pressure to give up our table. Highly recommended!

Good food but dodgy service. We arrived to a dirty table. Domineering manageress brushed crumbs off the table onto my mum's seat(?!), said she come and wipe table but never did. Senior staff seemed preoccupied by the displays of jams, and occasionally would boss about the smiley but rather hapless staff. Not much attention paid to diners. Food was fine: nice but not special.

I think that the team here have taken on board all the comments below as the service was great, the food was totally yummy and the music/ambience perfect. We both had a fab evening and would definitely be returning / recommending.

One of the worst brunches I've ever had... We waited 20 minutes for it just to find one of the fried eggs 'broken' and the yolk oozing out and the 'bubble and squeak' was just a huge lump of mash.
Worst still was the manageress of the restaurant making a bizarre attempt to convince me that the mash was in fact bubble and squeak. I believe I know what the difference is between the two!
Overall, a pretty poor experience. A lot of hype over the restaurant but the standards fall well short of my expectations
I will not go back there again

I used to love Bill's but lately they disappointed me way too many times and lost me from a faithful and royal customer. Not only that, I would go 3 times a week and always introduce it to new people and I was even planning to have my birthday dinner there but a series of disasters from them, rude and unhelpful reponses from them. The last drop was when I went with two friends and one of them had beer, after AFTER she had finished her beer the rude waitress came and said that it's their policy that they have to order a starter with alcohol. She said that AFTER the beer was finished, not before she ordered it. My friend wasn't hungry but ordered something that she didn't eat... how incredibly RUDE is that. I'm NEVER going there again, I am utterly appalled and ashamed to have brought anyone in there

AWFUL!

I sent 1 hour trying to find the restaurant in the 1st place, with no help from the staff that I phoned for advice. Then when inside the restaurant things only got worse. Lazy staff standing around chatting, while I was trying to get a refill on my coffee. I hate to say it but I just dont ever want to go back to this restaurant again.

My girlfriend and I popped along to Bills for a Saturday morning breakfast after hearing good things. Total letdown! Service started off good but swiftly went down hill. Our food (Bills breakfast) was cold which is probably all you need to know - even the beans that cost £1 extra! Discerning breakfasters go elsewhere. This one is for the tourists.

Food quite nice, but in small, disappointing portions. Wanted breakfast but had missed it by ten minutes and told it was not available and nothing could be done nor was any attempt made!. Neither could we sit where we would have liked. We probably should have left before eating and are unlikely to go back .

I had the grilled chorizo burger and my partner in crime the garlic chicken breast for dinner. None too impressed. The chorizo wasn't bad, to be fair, but the chicken was only so so. I had a bloody mary, too, and that was definitely lacking luster. I don't reckon I'll be going back any time soon. Three stars from me anyway because the food's pretty standard, the service wasn't as bad as other comments suggested and I like the crazily lit building next in the same square. It makes you feel like you're in the Tron movie.

I went there on Sunday & the staff were efficient, bubbly and charming, so I suspect the teething problems have passed. Totally agree that food & value are fantsatic. What a great arrival in the usually over-priced west end.

Like the one in Lewes so was pleased to see the one opening in Covent Garden. Good place to go if you don't want to have any conversation with your friends! It had VERY LOUD MUSIC when we were there which made people shout so the din was awful! Twice we asked for the music to be turned down which they did for a short while but then it was turned up again - obviously for the benefit of the staff not the customers! Great shame as the service, staff and food were all fine but it was completely spoilt by the uncomfortably loud music.

Been to the Brighton one and it was fantastic. Came to the London one in Covent Garden and service is dire. If you enjoy non-existent service and incompetent staff come here.

Totally agree with the comments above, amazing food, especially the breakfast, but service is particularly poor-we had to chase the staff on several occasions just to place an order. Not sure how they justify the compulsory 12,5% service charge! Not quite up to the Brighton standards just yet.....

We found bills on a chance look around in covent garden. We waited about 30min at the door even though 4 tables were free? Not sure why and this wasn't explained either, as they weren't reserved. Perhaps the kitchen wasn't coping but the uninformative staff weren't worried about potential diners leaving. We too had our drinks order mixed up, but the mains were good. Chicken and chorizo stew recommended. Unfortunately the service let this place down.

I LOVE the Bills in Lewes so was super excited when the London one opened closer to home. I’ve eaten there a few times now since it opened and compared to the Lewes branch the service definitely has a lot to be desired. I went there on a Sunday for brunch recently and was told we couldn’t order from the lunch menu yet since it was 15 min before the lunch time menu went into effect. We were a table of four and waited at least 50 min for our food- a simple breakfast. They got one of our orders wrong and then when they did finally bring the correct order forgot to put the toppings on the main dish! Anyway, despite all this the food is actually very good and fresh. I’m not a vegetarian but the vegetarian breakfast is fantastic. They have good fruit smoothies as well. A good place to eat in Covent Garden despite the sporadic bad service.
