That Kateh's small room of pretty candlelit tables was fully booked on a Wednesday evening shows it's doing something right. You come here for rich Persian stews, served with unabashed directness.
A plate bearing a huge pile of rice is brought, beside which, in a metal pot, is set the stew - perhaps khoresht-e fesenjan (dark and tender duck thigh with walnut and pomegranate) or the less successful ghelieh mahi (cod fillet atop a combination of tamarind, tomato and herbs). Dezfouli salad was a terrific concoction of cucumber, pomegranate, lemon juice, mint and 'angelica powder', while the meatballs were solid comfort food, in a slightly spicy tomato sauce - perfect for scooping up with the sensational taftoon, (seeded brown and white flatbreads, a generous portion for £1.50). The combination of rosewater sorbet and lime juice in the falloodeh made a zingy finish, even if some may find the traditional inclusion of noodles rather disconcerting.
Our only criticisms are the eccentricities of the warm and friendly staff: slow delivery of menus can be excused in a bustling restaurant, stern refusal to stave off our hunger by bringing the taftoon ahead of other starters might be a charming eccentricity, but pouring water into a glass half full of wine is startlingly inattentive.
Sorry, booking is not available at the moment.

Tables outdoors ( 5, terrace ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Booking advisable, Separate room for parties ( seats 10 ), Available for hire, Takeaway serviceA well kept neighbourhood secret. I've never experienced poor service, far from it. The staff are of mixed nationality and usually excellent. My favourite is the prawn starter, and also I love the simple Joojeh: chicken and rice. Last time I went, a week ago, the chef had made a delicious Persian soup which was astounding.
delicious food and warm friendly service. amazing value for money
Extremely rude manager and terrible customer service
I was, up until last night, a fan of Kateh, having been there more than a half dozen times in the last few months. However I will not be going back there after my experience last night. We booked a table for 8:30pm, arrived on time and first were told that our table would not be ready for another 20 minutes. We were standing in the doorway (as there is no room to stand anywhere else in the restaurant while waiting) - they had asked us to wait in the pub next door, we asked if we could take a menu with us to start to decide what we would have - waiting in the doorway for someone to bring us the menu - my friend had a sip of water from her water bottle (we had just come from yoga - showered and dressed up) and the manager tore across the restaurant and screamed at her for drinking her water. Note 1) our table is not ready 2) they have no where for us to wait and we are in the door way. Shocked and stunned by what had just happened - we were so looking forward to our meal there we decided we'd stick it out. Still waiting in the door way 10 minutes later - I went to request the menu from the serving station and was rudely told '20 minutes?!' that there would be no table ready for me for another hour - and the rude manager came back and continued yelling at me.
To the owners: Please replace your manager. I will not be coming back there as long as he works there and neither will my friends and acquaintances in Maida Vale/Little Venice.
Absolutely horrendous.
Great vibe. perfect for dates. polite and friendly service. good food.... what more can you ask for?
Had an amazing time here, perfect venue for a date. Staffed with most hospitable Persian waitresses, gave me the feeling of dining in Shiraz with vine leaves hanging off the ceiling. Affordable too!
Was there yesterday, have been a few times, the food is fantastic, the service very good, the catch being that it’s expensive, and you end up paying almost 2x of what it would have cost in Alounak. Kateh's koofteh berenji is out of this world though, so worth checking out if you don’t fancy the queue at the ‘nak.
