Most of the Turkish restaurants in Hackney are found along a short stretch of road in Dalston, but Anatolia has kept the red and white flag flying on Mare Street for years. Supplementing its eat-in trade with a popular takeaway counter, the rather undistinguished dining room is bigger than it first appears from the street, but service remains pleasingly swift. The menu offers few surprises, but you'll still need to choose with care. Mixed meze, for instance, proved a more appetising appetiser than lentil soup. And while a rather curious 'roll shish' (lamb encasing cheese and onion, though we tasted little of either) was pretty unappealing, the mixed kebab offered pound upon pound of charcoal-grilled meaty perfection.
