It's all change at the Foyles cafe. Ray's Jazz has moved upstairs, leaving this perennially popular second-floor lunch spot with double the space in which to scatter mismatched wooden chairs, tables and a handful of leather sofas. All of which means you're more likely to find a seat at which to savour the sandwiches, artisanal quiches or own-made soups; there are also cakes galore, many of them suitable for vegans, and the range of teas and coffees is second to none. Yet there's no denying the fact that - ongoing live jazz performances and the occasional decorative record sleeve notwithstanding - the loss of all that vinyl has turned what once felt like a culturally edgy meeting place into a pretty conventional café.
