Simultaneously highbrow and homely, the CAC's small café pulls in a mix of lunching mums with babies and bug-eyed arts students slouching in wicker chairs and spreading papers over the wooden tables. Windows overlook bustling Finchley Road (confusingly, CAC's nowhere near Camden Town), while chunky modern furnishings lend an arty air bolstered by Wednesday evening film screenings and meetings of the Ranters' Café debate society. Yet it's physical rather than intellectual sustenance that is the café's raison d'être: imaginatively filled sandwiches, intense coffees and innovative specials including a salad of the day (rocket, blue cheese and pear) on our most recent visit in January.
