Café-bar: Brazilian

Canela - meaning cinnamon stick in Portuguese - has done a decent job of providing the peasant food of Portugal and Brazil some sex appeal. This branch has a dramatic black and red interior, which, coupled with an energetic musical soundtrack, serves to give the place the feel more of a nightclub than a café. By contrast, service was laid-back and amenable, with staff happy to talk first-timers through the options.

We appreciated the depth of flavour in a classic feijoada: a rich stew of black beans dotted with smoky, fatty meats and served, Brazilian-style, with rice, farofa (coarse roasted cassava flour) and sliced orange - though for workers' fare, it cost a decidedly bourgeois £10.60. The deli counter is packed with bold, appetising salads and quiches, as well as Brazilian streets eats: chewy cheese bread (pão de queijo), a starchy drumstick-shaped snack of breaded chicken and potato (coxinha), and a thick-set lemon curd tart with a coconutty base (quindim). Coffee comes with a cinnamon stick for stirring: just as in Lisbon.

Had a good chicken curry at Canela in Carnaby Street yesterday - I love this place. Comfortable, relaxed, ... such a shame the only FOH lady was having a bad day. I received a shockingly-bad espresso. She was in such a bad mood, rude, grumpy and clearly quote "paying for her sins by working sunday's" - such a shame. I will not be back if I see her behind the bar! Pastry is excellent, shame about such a gorgeous Elektra not being used to it's full capacity... or even half!

I usually stop in at Canella before or after going to the Donmar (50 yards up the road).

The Staff are lovely and the food feels (and looks) homely and well made - more importantly it's also uniformally delicious. As are the fab Caipirinhas!!

Unpretentious foodie lovliness!

Pao de queijo (cheese balls) are originally from Minas Gerais and not from Rio. This is something, we from Minas, are very proud about!
