Within London's Jewish community, Carmelli is an enduringly and rightfully popular purveyor of quality food. Quite how they makes their bagels so crispy on the outside yet so soft on the inside has baffled the minds of many rabbinical scholars, but it's probably the main reason why Jews are known to visit the place more frequently than the synagogue. You can't go wrong with a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel, but you'd also do well to try the borekas (filo pastry with various fillings), or take home a chollah or rye bread. On a Saturday night you'll have to fight your way through a dense throng -and bear in mind that during Passover, the bread is unleavened.
