Carmelli may be the most renowned purveyor of bagels in north-west London, but those in the know would argue that the real pinnacle of bagel greatness lies slightly further north, at Daniel's. This place has been a surefire hit for many years, making a variety of seeded loaves, rolls, crumbly croissants encrusted with Marcona almonds, and a nice line in treats for the kids - from mini bagels to 'his and hers' bootee-shaped meringues. It goes without saying that there's a surfeit of smoked salmon; this being the age of globalisation, Daniel's even serves it in sushi form. It's worth trying a loaf of chollah, the Jewish sabbath bread, which is made with egg and could be a softer, savoury cousin of brioche.
