White and airy, gently elevated above street level, and with one long window perching you above Islington’s back alleys, Viet Garden is a lovely space, but navigating its complex menu can be a game of chance. The Hanoi beef you order may taste of takeaway sweet-and-sour sauce, while your friend, by some lucky stab in the dark, gets the delicate tarragon chicken with a paper-thin breadcrumb coating and a mysterious, aromatic tang. A starter of salt and pepper fish, liberally laced with raw dill, was deliciously dry yet succulent, but battered squid, accompanied by a thimbleful of salt, lined the stomach the way a battered sausage might before a big night out. Still, a risk worth taking at least once.
