Escape the throngs of tourists on Long Acre by ducking for a breather into this inspirational travel shop. Stanfords is almost as essential to your trip as suntan lotion. In addition to every kind of travel guide, you’ll find background literature on every conceivable destination, a specially selected fiction range, world music and cinema, a children’s section and navigation software in the basement.

The selection of equipment like medical kits, binoculars and torches (all upstairs) has also grown in recent years. Check out the giant maps on each shop floor, then go to the basement and have your very own customised map or aerial photograph printed out in poster form. Adding even more character, Stanfords stocks atlases and antique maps and guides. A café is now open at the back of the ground floor.

As an avid traveller and self-professed explorer, stumbling across Stanfords was an absolute dream come true. Whilst it is actually quite impractical to carry books when backpacking abroad (with just a carry-on) I still almost purchased the entire Europe section of the shop. The staff are genuinely willing to help and also seem really interested in your travel plans, the bookshop also occasionally hold book launches and author events which are great fun. Aside from the more adventurous travel sections, Stanfords also stock a huge range of books about London - great for both tourists and Londoners.... no matter how many years you've lived here, the city is so huge and changing at such a pace, there is no way you can claim to know or have seen everything! This shop will open your eyes to what a wonderful world is outside your front door and fill you with an incurable sense of wanderlust!
