The 25-metre main pool (that runs Tom Daley Diving Academy classes) plus separate leisure and teaching pools are undeniable attractions at this large centre. The sports hall caters for basketball, volleyball, badminton and five-a-side football, the fitness timetable features more than 50 classes each week in two studios, and the gym has a huge cardiovascular (CV) room. The QM is also home to Cobra Gym (07836 236108/www.cobra-gym.co.uk), run for more than 20 years by two-times world kickboxing champion Tim Izli.

Well unlike other reviews on Trip Adviser, I had no issues with the front of house staff. I didn't actually see any other staff around but I was only there an hour and a half during peak gym hour (busy!)
The gym is essentially a basic council run gym and also part of the Better Gym network. It does need a lick of paint and a good deep clean especially in the shower area which looked a little black (mould) in areas which isn't great but I have seen worse (Seymore Place, another of the Better facilities just up the road in Mayfair is so bad/unclean and grimy it scared me from ever going back- this gym isn't as bad by far!).
Upsides are that the general people attending the gym were work-horses just wanting to get on and use the machines, not (like I'd experienced in other branded gyms) wanting to walk/hang and be dragged uphill on a treadmill whilst reading the latest copy of Heat (why people ever think this is going to burn calories let alone build anything other than a hunch-back or joint strain issues in their shoulders, is beyond me.) But there was none of that at this gym, no queues because people were so in the zone and this built a good vibe in the gym even if it was a tad anti-social.
TVs were lacking on the cardio machines which were very dated and a bit basic. I'd have hoped they'd updated or bought in a few different machines for more variety, but they serve a purpose even if they do look a little old. TV screens seemed to work on the whole bar one or two and subtitles on made it possible to watch something (anything) rather than stare at a wall.
Changing rooms were OK, though I thought needed to have a cleaner based inside all the time or most of the time though the room itself did get quite busy. It did also seem to be home to a few non English speaking Romanian's who just visited to use the shower and left. The showers did look like they needed to be refurbished due to neglect in keeping them cleaned, there was a hair dryer and a plug if you have your own appliances (or charger as others seemed to take advantage of). Could have really benefited from a good sweep as hair was gathering all over the floor.
All in all, I would probably return but only if I was stuck in the area. I'm a bit of a clean freak. I don't mind mess or disorganisation but I can't do mould or grime or loose hair. This alone has lost the gym 2 stars, it loses another for having dated machines but gains a star for having staff who seemed to me to be welcoming, friendly and approachable.
