The Laboratory

Sitting in the shadow of Alexandra Palace, this former British Rail laboratory has been transformed into a beautiful and sophisticated gym. There is an underground swimming pool as well as an exercise room with the most up-to-date strength and cardio equipment which faces out on to pretty tree-lined views. There is also a well-spaced weights room and functional zone, beauty and holistic treatment rooms and a poolside day spa and relaxation area with dedicated manicure and pedicure spaces. There's also a wide range of yoga classes on offer.

Terrible terrible company do NOT go there. Booked an appointment and turned up only to be told it was not at that branch but the other side of London. Said they would not refund the fee even though no therapy was provided and charged me regardless. Much better Spa's in London who do care about customer service. Go elsewhere.

I feel I have to endorse what the member says below-who has given it four stars.  I am an ex-personal trainer/fitness instructor with a long history of teaching at many clubs across London.  The Laboratory far excels all of those establishments.  I was looking for a club to belong too now I am doing a different job and I am so glad that it is on my doorstep.  It is a art deco listed building and quirky as a result.  It is set in beautifully tended gardens and therefore the views and those of Muswell Hill and the surrounding area are stunning.  The range of classes (pretty much non-stop from early morning to late at night-seven days a week) is exemplary and these are taught by knowledgeable and motivating teachers.  The standard of the equipment in the gym and free weights area is totally up-to-date.  Plenty of state of the art cardio machines with all the latest mod cons to enable you to use all of your technology to enhance your workout.  Fastidiously clean changing rooms.  A recently revamped and refurbished 25 metre swimming pool, sauna, steam and jacuzzi area.  The café is a lovely place to spend time either just reading the free newspapers and magazines with a coffee or indulging in a delicious home-made salad or home-cooked hot meal-again with a fabulous view from the terrace or the panoramic windows.  It has wonderful tranquil treatment rooms with highly qualified therapists and a wide selection of therapies and treatments.  I could go on and on-I feel so passionately-try it for yourself - it has a wonderful day spa.

The reviews below are ridiculous. To give this place one star would be to say it has nothing good about it. It has the most up-to-date equipment possible in the gym. The changing rooms have always been clean when I've been in them and I go every 2 days and I'm a male. If you want you can also get a trainer as part of your monthly subscription to give you a workout routine if you want. Each trainer specialises in a certain type of fitness, so people who want to lose weight, to people who want to gain weight will find some one suitable to give them a routine. The routine's are updated every month to fit your progress, and you'll be contacted by your trainer every fourth week to book a session. The trainers are also excellent. The swimming pool, sauna and hot tubs are all really nice, even if the swimming pool isn't massive, and that area is always quite quiet when I've been there. I can't comment on the spa or classes. The only problems I have with the gym is that they do not offer food for people who are trying to bulk up in the cafe, and you do get some inconsiderate arseholes in the gym, especially the weights section. Who, for example, will leave weights out, leave their overwear on the equipment, and generally prance around as if they're God's given gift. But if you can ignore twats you'll be fine. The reviews written below must have been done by some real picky snobs, because I can assure you that it doesn't get better than this place when it comes to the gym.

Staff have attitude all over pretty young ladies though!! This place is over priced and over rated, they should train their staff to be nicer and clean the shower areas!! Terrible.
