After its original home - a 50 seater function room above The Stag pub in Victora - was rudely demolished in 2012, Above the Stag was forced to up sticks and become a wandering theatre as it searched for a new home. Now it is based in a renovated railway arch in Vauxhall. While the in-house ATS Theatre Company share a love of musicals, they tend to be more of the adult variety complete with oodles of drag. Straight plays are staged here too, all under the competent guidance of artistic director Peter Bull.
The theatre, opened in 2013 under a refurbished railway bridge in Vauxhall, features a fully-stocked bar and lounge area.

I just love going to this theatre - every show they put on is SO much fun! It's lively, intimate, and community minded. I lived in London for 2 years just around the corner from Above the Stag and went to almost every show they put on; I recently returned for a visit to London and had to include seeing Party at Above the Stag. Can't recommend this place enough.
It takes guts to run a full time LGBT theatre! And this is such a great little venue with superb original shows.
ATS consistently put on an amazing range of plays and musicals, some sad, some hilarious and others somewhere in between. However, they are always of the highest quality with superb acting.
The entire team work tirelessly to make your theatre visit an enjoyable and stress-free experience. Exciting productions in a unique environment.
As a regular fringe theatre goer I can honestly say hand on my heart that the high stardards of every single production i have ever watched at the Above The Stag Theatre have never been compromised. Every visit to this venue is always immensely enjoyable! Keep up the good work guys!!!
A unique theatre space in London putting on excellent productions. Worth a trip from som eexcellent theatre.
It's an intimate space, so you always feel closer to the production. The shows are always great entertainment and the staff that run it wonderful.
Above the Stag offers top-quality productions! The venue clearly operates on a limited budget but still manages to produce outstanding programs. The actors are generally young and enthusiastic. It is a pleasure to watch them perform, knowing that later we will be able to say, "We saw him when!"
Unique. Friendly. Every show produced in house. The only LGBT theatre in the country. Visionary. Accepting. All inclusive.
This is the only gay theatre in UK, so far as I know. It offers productions of a wide variety of plays, from Christmas pantomime to reality docu-drama. The small auditorium makes it a friendly venue. I love it.
Fantastic venue that has a wonderful sense of charm about it. London's only dedicated LGBT+ I can honestly say I've not seen a bad show there.
The nearest to being out with a large group of friends. Friendly venue, great shows, wonderful atmosphere, and all run on a shoestring by volunteers. A great place!
Going to a play at Above the Stag Theatre is always a great night. They are friendly and welcoming and the standard is always high.
This venue consistently offers excellent, entertaining and sometimes ground-breaking fringe-theatre productions all in a friendly and hospitable environment. Ticket costs are reasonable and there is something for everyone. Venues like this need to be nurtured and supported so that they can continue to support the neighbourhood and the communities that they serve.
It is a welcoming friendly LGBT venue that puts on a range of theatre, from moving serious plays through gay history to a wonderfully rude Christmas panto.
Friendly LGBT theatre, excellent productions, outstanding acting and singing. I have loved everything I have seen performed here and I now go to every show.
So many incredible shows, support of local LGBTIQ (is that what we are meant to use now?) theatre. The whole management team work so hard to create such a wonderful theatre and productions that always deliver.
Friendly excellent customer service... a pleasure to visit all the way from the West Country :-) thanks guys!!
A hidden gem, it is very true to itself and the gay community. Although it is a small venue it certainly has a great atmosphere and a breeding ground for talent on and off the stage. It needs to be and must be cherished.I took my parents there last week to see 'Party' - they really enjoyed it, even if it was very revealing!
It's cosy, fun and friendly, alongside providing great entertainment in a welcoming atmosphere. Would always recommend.
Best LGBT theatre in london...probably uk.unique well chosen shows....Lambeth borough....your lucky to have such a venue
Original sharp funny outrageous and sometimes very moving plays and musicals in a great intimate venue with a large bar, good and happy service.
I been there many times and the atmosphere is friendly and the bar and front of house staff has been very friendly and helpful I love the close and interment style And the performers have been from the community and also sometimes very young and new up and coming performers Londoners got a hidden gem to the Queer Culture
Always great fun, wonderful shows. Once I was very late due to a traffic accident, the theatre held the entire show just for me, and even let me buy a beer at the bar first. I felt like the queen. Such a wonderful team. Love them to bits. God bless!
This friendly venue hosts excellent new writing such as The Sins of Jack Saul, the best play I've seen this year. Consistently high standard of production, thanks to a talented team both on and off the stage. Great rapport with the audience who enjoy a mix of music and drama.
A brilliant theatre venue with a great range of diverse LGBT content throughout the year. The highlight is the festive panto which sells out earlier every year. Resident director Andrew Beckett has a great eye and feel for allowing the scripts in his shows to come alive just as the audience would want them to.
A fabulously friendly and professional theatre representing the best of the LBGT Community. Wonderful productions with raw talent in an intimate environment. I love it.
Have seen two productions here - 'Joe Orton - The Musical' and, more recently, 'The Sins of Jack Saul'. Both were way better than anything you will see at any West End tourist-trap and the actors are close enough to touch. Theatre at its most immediate and real. Can't recommend highly enough.
