A hilarious assault on Christmassy values from a drag superstar

They’re back! But this time the world’s premier Jewish, Narcoleptic drag queen – and winner of season 5 of Ru Paul’s drag race (who uses the pronoun they) – isn’t playing Kitty Witless as they did in the Vaudevillians, they’re Jinkx. Piano-playing sidekick Major Scales is with them, as great as ever, and together they’re assaulting Christmas.

Opening with a growling, Nazi rendition of ‘O Holy Night’ with Jinkx putting air quotes around “saviour” and goose-stepping to “fall on your knees” – if you’re a Crimbophile this show has the capacity to completely ruin the festive season for you.

The premise of the show is that it’s fucking awful to have Christmas and Christian values shoved down your throat at this time of year, especially if you’re a minority. The jokes are based on personal experiences and the bulk are gender-based, with some inevitable Trump one-liners thrown in. Their stand-up is one of the reasons that they were crowned the next drag superstar, and dressed in an off the shoulder, super-spangly, red Mrs Claus number they are still laugh-out-loud funny.

To be a drag queen it’s a pre-requisite that you are can pretend to sing someone else’s songs but what makes Jinkx Monsoon blessed with more charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent than her competitors is their voice – they can belt out a song with more power than Mariah Carey after a Red Bull. And their cabaret-style duet with music maestro Major Scales of Miley Cyrus’s ‘We Can’t Stop’ is nothing short of genius.

It’s dark, a little bit depressing but ultimately hilarious – go, but don’t expect to feel all warm and fuzzy afterwards.
