The result of an invitation to 140 writers to take custody (metaphorically – they are writers after all) of the keys to the Royal Court for the summer, Open Court is a six-week festival of theatre, events and ideas preluding new Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone's first full play season in September. 'Surprise Theatre' (June 10-July 16) in the Jerwood will invite audiences to buy tickets to an unannounced performance – a pet idea of Caryl Churchill's, no less – while the work in 'Lost in Theatre' (June 10-July 20) will be hidden around the building in a theatrical treasure hunt in which you participate via headphones. Things will get intimate with 'Playwright @ Your Table' (June 15-July 13), in which playwrights such as David Grieg and Simon Stephens will give private readings in secret locations, and quite possibly off-the-wall with 'Soap Opera' (July 1-13), a collaboration performed in nightly five minute episodes and a live climactic omnibus at the Bussey Building in Peckham. Participating writers on that one include Bola Agbaje and Lucy Kirkwood. International and young playwrights will also get a look in ('The Big Idea: PIIGS' June 25-29 and 'Kids Court' July 16-20). And if that weren't enough, 'Weekly Rep' (see individual listings) will see six new plays performed weekly in the Jerwood by one company. For full programme details visit www.royalcourttheatre.com.
